Certifying Affidavit of Single Status

Planning to get marry in China. On the Consulate-general of China site:

1) I sign the Affidavit of Single Status before notary public.

2) Certified by the clerk of county (Los Angeles).

3) Certified by the Secretary of State.

4) Authenticated by the Chinese Consulate in Los Angles. (by mail only)

Why can't I bring the Affidavit of Single Status and sign in front of Secretary of State?

What does the clerk of county actually certify? Me being single OR the notary public is legitimate?

Very confused! Thank you!

Sorry, that's the 'way to do it' in the USA.

Alternatively -

You could also get an 'affadavit of marriageability' from the US Embassy/Consulate in China (BeiJing, Shenyang, Chengdu, Shanghai ) - then walk that over to the 'local' marriage office, ask the marriage office WHICH translation (English to Chinese) office to use, go there, get it translated, come back to the marriage office and get married with yer lass.

Pretty good experience in getting the Affidavit of Single Status Authenticated by the Chinese Consulate. They actually authenticate the Secretary of State's seal and not my document. It could have been Affidavit of Being a Monkey for all they care.

Arrived at 10am on Wednesday, free parking on 4th street, walked to 500 Shatto Place 3rd floor, got two number from the machine, called 2 minutes later and submitted my Visa, called 4 minutes later submitted my authentication paper. Came back on Thursday 9:30am a week later, waited for 20 minutes in line, paid $160 and got my authentication paper and visa.

I think it depends on the state you live in. I looked on the Washington State Secretary of State website and nowhere did I see a requirement of certification from the county clerk. Check with the Secretary of State for your State to see what the requirements are in this regard.

May 3, 2011: Received NOA1 hardcopy in mail
July 26, 2011: Received NOA2 via text/email!!!
July 30, 2011: Received NOA2 hardcopy in mail
August 8, 2011: NVC received file
September 1, 2011: NVC case number assigned
September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)
October 6, 2011: Case complete at NVC
November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!
December 7, 2011: POE - Sea-Tac Airport

September 17, 2013: Mailed I-751 to CSC

September 23, 2013: Received NOA1 in mail (receipt date September 19th)

October 16, 2013: Biometrics Appointment

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal
