Well, I didn't vote because I am not a future husband or a foreign bride, but I thought the article was ridiculous. We did everything (except the plane tickets  ) for MUCH less. For example, we had our wedding bands handmade on the streets of Kathmandu before our very eyes out of the same piece of SILVER for a few dollars. Much more meaningful to me than running out to whatever chain jewelry store is nearby here in the US. I guess I think if two people want to be together bad enough, they'll find a way and neither one need be wealthy... just creative, determined, and in love!

PS Sorry if my post is repetitive of someone else's... didn't have time to read the whole thread

Many thanks to the Visajourney community for all the help!

Here's a few questions I may get flamed for: WHY actively seek love in another country with people who don't speak a common language? And if you can't see the person stood in front of you, and you can't understand each other....how can you feel love? How can you feel a bond with what that person says...Maybe you're in love with the interpreter, lol.

And how, if you need the skills of an interpreter... how does one expect to communicate with the foreign fiance/spouse once she is here?

3 trips – flights @ 1400 each---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------$4200

$1,400 flights? Where are these brides, in Australia?

You forgot that once married, your husband will pay LESS tax ! Money is saved...

Not necessarily....only if your combined income is less than $150,000 p.a. or so

(which is a given in NYC - I wouldn't even dream of accepting a job here that

pays less than 6 figures.)

I can answer that Lisa. My fiance speaks english. In person and over the phone we communicate just fine. But she is from Russia and they use a cryllic alphabet - MUCH different then standard Greek alphabet/English. Interpretation of anything written is needed. It is an expense. Its an expense because the US demands all documents in English.

K1 Visa Process long ago and far away...

02/09/06 - NOA1 date

12/17/06 - Married!

AOS Process a fading memory...

01/31/07 - Mailed AOS/EAD package for Olga and Anya

06/01/07 - Green card arrived in mail

Removing Conditions

03/02/09 - Mailed I-751 package (CSC)

03/06/09 - Check cashed

03/10/09 - Recieved Olga's NOA1

03/28/09 - Olga did biometrics

05/11/09 - Anya recieved NOA1 (took a call to USCIS to take care of it, oddly, they were helpful)

TY for answering...but I'm more curious about those who can't speak English....the article mentions 'telephone translation' as well as 'email translaton' so if you need an interpreter to even speak....how do you create a bond & fall in love?

I think the original author of the "financial essay" has done some due diligence and had put out the disclaimers well before presenting his thesis. That makes his case study correct in his context (IMHO). Personally, I think he has a good point and even if the numbers are flawed (according to people), I think they are in the ballpark.

Good job.

I had the same thought too, it's almost like Cyrano de Bergerac or something.

And like the other women in the thread (who said that the male USC is the norm, are there statistics showing such) I couldn't vote as no options applied, but I'd say it's highly inaccurate. For example, whenever I visited him, I stayed in his apartment and he drove and most of the time we ate in. I guess in some cultures that doesn't work. And he gets free calls to me with his mobile provider, so most of the telecom expenses are text messaging.

But think of it this way... so your mail-order bride costs a lot. Think of the prices of dating services! It's a bargain! (I had a friend who used to sell dating service subscriptions, I couldn't believe how much they charged. Oh, and for the sarcasm-impaired....that comment was tongue-in-cheek.)

The original writer of this "invoice", failed to mention all the money saved by not having to take your OH out to dinner & a movie every week, purchasing new clothes for your dates, fuel you didn't have to spend to go on said dates. Since my husband is so far away I have saved money on makeup, beauty salons, new shoes and clothes because for the majority of the last three years I haven't had to worry about what I look like he can't see me anyways! Just a thought.

Lisa I agree with you, not sure how you can fall in love with someone you can't understand. I always thought communication was the key to a happy relationship.

I think the "More!?!?!" comment was a statement of shock. The amount in the article is more than many of us could ever hope to spend, so anything even more than that is that much more shocking.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

I guess we should keep in mind that not everyone is in the same situation. Altough we gather here with common goals, the membership comes from a wide cross-section of circumstances.
