Judge: California gay marriages can resume on Aug. 18

U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker Thursday declined to continue a stay on his finding that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, paving the way for same-sex marriages to resume after Aug. 18 unless the measure's defenders quickly obtain a stay from a higher court.

Attorneys defending Proposition 8 have said they would seek an immediate stay from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal. If that fails, they have said they will go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to obtain a permanent stay pending appeal.

Private attorneys defending Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution to ban gay marriage, filed an appeal last Thursday with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal.

They are challenging Walker's finding the day before that Proposition 8 violates gays' federal constitutional right to equal protection and due process.

Difference Between a Biblical Literalist and a Biblical Contextualist

A Biblical literalist is a person that believes the Bible word for word. Biblical literalists do not believe that the Bible is open for any kind of interpretation. In the mind of a Biblical literalist, the Bible is as much of a history book as a text book that one might have been handed in school. Biblical literalist tend to be the most fervent supporters of ideas like Creationism, and any other view that would take faith into account over science.

It should be pointed out that Biblical literalists do recognize that parables of Jesus as being parables, and holding symbolic value. A Biblical literalist is going to realize that Heaven is not truly the size of a mustard seed.

A Biblical contextualist is someone who believes that most, if not all, of the Bible should be open for interpretation. A biblical contextualist is one that would search of symbolic meanings found in the stories, or in the teachings of the Bible. These readers of the Bible became more prevalent after the results were introduced from the Vatican II summit of the Roman Catholic Church do to the loosening of some of the teachings by the Catholic Church.

I don't take the bible literally. However, there is little left to the imagination in the following bible verses. If you are in denial, please feel free to pretend that when God has 2 bears maul 42 innocent children, that the word children is a code word for adults (wait a second, that is still just as horrible of a crime). And when God says, in example 2, that he'll cut people by the sword, rape their wives, sack their homes, kill their children in front of their eyes, show no compassion for children, and have no mercy even on helpless babies: That is just a bad translation!!

Yes you do. That is if you believe that every part of the Bible is an edict from God. It's not. It was written by humans, with all their personal hangups and imperfections.
