Traveling out of USA / Living abroad on GC

Does anyone know what the rules are for GC holders if they plan on traveling out side USA for more than 1 year, how long can they stay gone, or how often must they come into USA or what is the amount of time GC holder can live outisde of the USA?

My wife and I are planning on moving to Japan for a few years and need to know how this woul dimpact her GC status

Time out of the country can be a factor in losing one's LPR status, but it's a common misunderstanding that time out of the country is the only factor and that periodic visits back to the USA are all it takes to retain status.

Check the USCIS web site for a FAQ on the issue of abandonment of status.
