Well, i don't think i got what you said but i will answer to what i understood, IF he is just your fiancee and you didn't marry him yet and his dad is dead , then he will get outa the army because his dad is dead.and if he is married to you and his dad is dead , he still wont get to the army.so if one of those 2 reasons are apply to you then you are safe , if you have another circumstances i didn't understand so feel free to tell me it.

Best regards

Sam

The letter he has right now from the military says he is not eligible to serve until he is 29 yrs old (he is 27 now). My fiance says that when he is 29 his brother will be out of college, and his brother will receive a waiver from serving in the army, and my fiance will then be eligible. So my question was, if my fiance returns to Egypt after he is 29 but before he is 30, can they still make him serve in the army, and if they do would he only have to serve until his 30th birthdate? Or would he simply be ineligible again for the army because he will be married to me?

That is absolutely terrible!! The paperwork you are talking about...are these papers for the Egyptian Army or papers to fill out on the US side? Also, I have heard that the army can be paid off. Do you know of anyone that has done that? Also, if he applies for citizenship, they cannot take him, correct?

I've never dealt with the paperwork but I have researched it a little. To verify though you'll want to look at the website of the local Egyptian Embassy serving your state in the US. They may have information there or a way to contact them. The headquarters for the Egyptian Military questions and paperwork are in DC however.

I do know of several people who paid off the Egyptian Military. It costs around $4,500. I wouldn't advise going and looking for these officers. When they learn that they are married to a foreign spouse they make themselves known. If you guys don't have the money at first then he will have to serve about 6 months and then the officers will approach him again with half the bribe price. However, I don't recommend either way because it is highly dangerous. The certificate to get them out is a fraud and if discovered can land them in military prison. When they go to serve knowing they have a foreign spouse who won't pay they make them suffer more in way I am not at liberty to discuss here.

It doesn't matter if they have US citizenship or applied for it. They will still take them because they still consider them Egyptian citizens first.

well, let me tell you this in easy way , its one of 3 .

1st : come back and show them that he lives in the US and they wont take him anyways because they dont take who is married to any foreign person and who even been to a foreign countries before .

2- wait till he get he citizenship then come by his US passport

3- come after he get 30.

This is incorrect and a popular myth widely believed in Egypt. There was a time when the military was not taking the men married to foreigners for reasons of national security. However, that is no longer case as they have caught on to what was happening. Even if he comes by his US passport and tries to leave by it the security at the airport may not let him out if the military has his name on their list. There have been so many caught this way.

I advise waiting it out until he is 30 and paying the fine or enrolling him in school and doing the paperwork to show he is in school to delay the service and have the "free to leave" paper.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but have a question that maybe Sam can answer. My fiance's father is deceased and he currently has military release until age 29, right now he is supporting his family and at 29 his brother will be out of college and I guess the Egyptian army feels the brother can take over the support. So my question is, does that mean he is only eligible to serve in the army for 1 year? And if he returned for a visit like the OP husband after his waiver is up will they automatically excuse him again because he will be married to a US citizen?

I get what you're saying. If he is called to serve at 29 his service can be anywhere between 1-3 years. The amount of time they serve depends on their level of education. The more education they have then the less amount of time they serve. If they have a college degree then expect them to serve 1 year to 16 months. If they have some college expect 16 months to more. And if they have only a high school education then expect them to serve 2 -3 years.

My Husband served till he was past 31 years old. They also can take them at age 30. There are men in their military that are as old as 32 and the men that are recalled for up to 9 years are even older than that. Dh told me about one man who was recalled in his 50's. I don't understand that and I was wondering if he was having a career in the military or something before hand.

So are you saying that during the time he is 29 he should not travel to Egypt at all, or what are some ways to get him out of military duty besides being in school? He has a bachelors degree so I guess they wouldn't expect him to serve for long. And can they call him to serve if he is here in the US?

If he is in the US they can certainly call him to serve or recall him but they can't expect him to serve while he's out of the country or to have received notice. He will have to provide proof he was out of the country during that time. When he is back in Egypt he would have to deal with this matter. If he goes back at the age of 29 he will have to show up to the military for service as well as to get the "free to leave" paper from them. As long as the country is still under the emergency law that has been in place since 1952 and was just renewed last year then he will have to serve. Since he has a bachelors degree and can provide proof of that they will take him to serve for a year to 16 months at the least. Also remember that at anytime during their service they can extend their service. One woman I know her Husband's group got into trouble for a piece of military equipment that had gone missing and the entire group had their military service extended for 6 more months. They were all punished. With this emergency law the military can pretty much do anything they want and if they tell them they're going to serve 16 months they can change it and make them serve the entire 3 years if they like. One rule of thumb is make no trouble and you get no trouble. Most likely though they have enough young recruits to fill their numbers that they don't have to take all of those who qualify to serve. Those are truly the lucky ones. If he goes back when he is 30 he may or may not have to serve. He will want a lawyer to represent him in front of the military and he will most likely have to a pay a fine for avoiding his service.

Sorry but you are wrong in this , THEY CAN'T even touch him..because he traveled by his egyptian passport ..so he is still there and someone else have the same name but american , so he is still there for us because he didnot come back by his egyptian passport ,that was the first reason , the second one is HE WILL BE AMERICAN , SO NO ONE CAN EVER TOUCH HIM NEVER EVER.

If you are correct, please explain why Cleo's and several other members' husbands were drafted into the Egyptian army AFTER getting married to Americans. Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding this whole thing?

If these ladies want to take the risk and believe what you're saying then by all means. This is the myth that is perpetuated and it's just not the case anymore. I hate to see when people fall into this trap though believing this is the case and it's not. And I'm sorry but what you believe is clearly misinformation because I know people first hand that they do take them, American or not, when the go to leave at the Airport if there is an unresolved Military service issue. The Egyptian Military honestly doesn't care if someone is married or engaged to a foreigner anymore or if they obtained status at another country. They still retain their Egyptian citizenship and are seen as Egyptians who avoided their military first. My Husband had several visits with the intelligence before they decided to take him for 16 months. Another Wife visited her Husband seven times and they took her Husband for 2 years and 8 months. Another Wife who'd already been married to her Husband for 5 years had her Husband taken for nearly 3 years and he has seven months left. She'd visited over 10 times already and staying several months at a time. I started an online support group for these wives. We know all about the ways of the Egyptian military. The four times of year they recruit. The recalls. The exemptions. What they can get out for. Where they get stationed and why. Who can visit them on Fridays at the basic training. That they get their Islamic holidays off and if the group is large then they rotate sections of the groups to go during the holidays at certain times.

However, we also learned that by talking about the Egyptian Military online and sharing information about their ways we put the husbands who are still in Egypt in jeopardy and we risk our own selves when traveling there again. Every time I talk about it an officer who came to our wedding seems to contact my husband such as he did last night. Coincidence? Every time we've talked in the past online together seriously about going back to Egypt I get a travel advisory email from the Embassy. Coincidence? While my roommate and I were on Thanksgiving holiday last year my passport and Egyptian marriage certificate disappeared from my files at my apartment. This was after my husband was approved for the visa in August and we were on AP/AR until he got the actual visa in Feb. Coincidence? It's all very odd to me especially the disappearing act when I know where I put them and always keep them and had checked them in their place just prior to the holiday contemplating taking them with me.

It is another popular myth that Americans are not touchable there. Americans can be arrested and put in jail. There have been several cases one such case was of the California Berkley student who was photographing the protests in Mahalla for his Masters Thesis. He was arrested and put in jail along with his translator. He got out because he used Twitter to communicate on his cellphone that he was arrested and his family notified the proper authorities. The translator to this day is still in jail there. If the student didn't have his cell phone who knows what would have happened to him. Just like with the pictures of the protest being taken the Egyptian military does not like photographs taken of their facilities or of their personnel or information shared about them and their process even if we are their wives and they knew this taking our husbands in there. Part of that is even a travel advisory warning for Americans traveling to Egypt on travel.state.gov. Now I've had my past threads about the Egyptian Military removed because I saw they were taken down on Google, all threads on VJ were Google searchable, and too many coincidences have happened in my own life. I've even maybe said to much for them in this thread, again.

We may be free in America but even we are not so free in Egypt.

I agree with Olivia. I don't know your status SamOnline, but you definately are giving out the wrong information. Where did you get all this information from?

Again, it's up to the people who asked questions regarding the Egyptian Army to listen or not to listen. Olivia has been there and done that.

Thanks Olivia for setting the record straight!!!

Along this same topic, but not pertaining to the original question... If I were to have a son in the US, and he were to obtain Egyptian citizenship, would he still be required to do the military service? I am pretty sure that he would, but my husband swears that the Egyptian army won't take anyone with dual citizenship. He's hell-bent on our kids having Egyptian citizenship, but I am not sure it's worth it if it means having to deal with the Egyptian military.
