What do you drink to celebrate?

If one's beliefs derive from the Bible?

I just did a cursory google search and came up with this...

Of course, you could argue that the Bible is just another book, we might as well believe in Harry Potter. And I'd agree with you. But the fact remains a lot of people do believe this stuff.

It's not alcohol that makes you do that stuff - you either want to do it or you do not. Alcohol does not make people do anything. If one feels one must remain sober to abstain from such behaviours, one has a serious problem period.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

The point being argued was whether a belief system exists that discourages drunkenness. Clearly, one does.

The rest is academic and as someone who does get drunk from time to time, I have very little interest.

If the premise is false, then the belief system is based on something irrational. No wonder some christians get into such a mess trying to adhere to the rules instead of following common sense principals.

Can someone explain to me why christians don't drink any alcohol when christ quite clearly drank it regularly, and indeed provided wine for a celebration when only water was available - allegedly? Is there some 'mistranslation' of wine going on. I find that quite hard to believe when wine is something that people have drunk for thousands of years, and not only that, was safer to drink, as was small beer because of the contamination that occurred in water supplies prior to the introduction of centralized sewerage and water sanitisation. Of course, one must understand that these alcoholic drinks were far less potent than their modern counterparts when it came to every day drinks, but I find the attitude to alcohol rather odd - although I do quite understand the dangers of addiction, which is a totally separate subject if one is being honest.

Other than your premise is completely false, the easy answer is that fermented beverages were safer to drink than water that may contain parasites.

Besides, I know many pagans, atheists, Muslims, Jews, and assorted communists, that choose healthier beverages, other than those that destroy your liver, and pollute your mind, for non-religious reasons.

What is false about it? I did amend my statement to say this was not true of all christians, but those of certain sects within christianity and they don't do it from some kind of preference, but because of a belief that drinking is sinful when there is nothing in the bible that makes such a claim at all. Drinking to the point of drunkenness is obviously more problematic, but it is based on a false premise that people that drink do things they do not want to do, or would not want to do if sober - that's ####### and as I also said, if you honestly believe that you can't drink because you are worried about what you might do while drunk, then you have serious issues that have nothing to do with alcohol.

I don't have any problem with anyone's personal preferences - people can choose to drink whatever they enjoy or think is most beneficial to them, but there is nothing righteous about not drinking alcohol and non drinkers are not special people.
