JetBlue flight attendant goes nuts

JetBlue flight attendant who went nuts was in bed with boyfriend when found by cops

The plane had just landed, but he was ready to take off.

A JetBlue flight attendant blew his top, grabbed some beer and bolted out an emergency slide at Kennedy Airport Monday - then headed home to have sex with his boyfriend.

After he was bonked in the head by a bag, Steven Slater stunned passengers by spewing profanity and ranting about quitting as the flight from Pittsburgh pulled up to the gate about noon.

"To the f-----g a--hole who told me to f--k off, it's been a good 28 years," Slater, 38, purred, cops said. "I've had it. That's it," he added, a passenger said.

The mad-as-hell steward grabbed a couple of brewskis and popped one open before activating the emergency exit, witnesses told airport employees.

After tossing his two carry-on bags on the slide, he followed them to the tarmac.

Slater - who actually first started working for airlines 20 years ago, not 28 - then walked to the AirTrain, stripped off his company tie and flung it off as bemused passengers watched.

"I wish we could all quit our jobs like that," said passenger Phil Catelinet, 36, of Brooklyn, who was on the flight and the AirTrain.

"He seemed kind of happy about it. He was like, 'I just quit my job.' "

Port Authority police said it took jetBlue 25 minutes to report the incident, allowing Slater time to leave the scene.

Cops found him in bed with his boyfriend when they arrived to arrest him at a beachfront home in the Rockaways with a porch overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, sources said.

He boasted to skeptical cops that he really did escape by chute with his carry-on luggage.

"Oh, yes, I did! I threw them down first and I went down after," he told cops, sources said.

He was grinning as police walked him in handcuffs to a squad car. "He left with a big smile on his face," said neighbor Curt Karkowski.

Slater was wearing a sheepish smile when Port Authority detectives walked him to a waiting van a few hours later. He was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.

JetBlue would not say how long Slater had worked for the airline, but he wrote on his MySpace page that he was "enjoying being back in the skies" after a five-year break.

"I love to max it out with trips around the world, sometimes on a moment's notice!" he gushed.

Neighbors described Slater as a nice guy, but said he was under some stress. "Steven's mother is dying," said Judy Rochelle, whose son Kenny lives with Slater. "She has lung cancer. She's had two chemos and the prognosis is not good. They were on their way out to California this weekend to settle her affairs."

Rochelle added that Slater "watched his father die of Lou Gehrig's disease not long ago. Steven's under a lot of pressure."

Slater's MySpace page, packed with photos of him posing in his jetBlue uniform, says he beat "alcoholism and substance abuse."

He apparently reached his breaking point on Flight 1052 when a passenger tried to get a bag from the overhead compartment and it clocked Slater on the head, cops said. Words were exchanged, and the passenger cursed at Slater, they said.

After the plane arrived at the gate, he took over the intercom and began spewing abuse.

"We just looked at each other and said, 'What the heck was that about?' " said Catelinet. "I thought, 'Let me get off the plane before they stop us or something.' "

He said he was stunned when he ran into Slater on the AirTrain, bragging about his "take your plane and shove it" stunt.

"It's pretty much the craziest thing I've ever seen on a plane," Catelinet said.

The brother of Slater's partner said he was "dumbfounded" by the wacky incident.

"He's an everyday ordinary guy, a nice guy," said John Rochelle, 39.

Neighbor Janet Bavasso, an ex-flight attendant, said she couldn't imagine Slater going off.

"I just can't picture him running down the tarmac," she said.

A jetBlue co-worker who was on the flight called Slater a working-class hero.

"It's something we all fantasize about," she said. "But we have kids and a mortgage or are just too chicken - or sane - to go through with [it]."

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I like the pic you posted, but it reminds me of a Michael Douglas lesser-known film entitled "Falling Down."

Falling Down Pics

MD was a nerdy guy who had everything you can imagine happen to him (lost wife, job, kids, the whole shebang).

You may note an automatic weapon in one of the pics.

It was kind of a "black comedy" but he was VERY SERIOUS throughout (that is required).

Our flight attendant hero probably didn't deserve the treatment he got,

but he stepped over the line and he just had his 15 min. of fame.

His story was on the front cover of EVERY tabloid-style paper in New York City this morning.

Being in the customer service field most of my life I can really relate to this. The stress builds and builds and one day YOU EXPLODE. It is ingrained in people that the customer is always right even when they are wrong that you would be amazed at what people pull and companies let them get away with for the sake of "customer service". I had a lady threaten me with physical violence one day and I started to call 911. After complaining to my district manager she got a dozen roses, a $25 gift card, and an apology from me.

I hear ya.

One of the places my wife will be applying for work is Stew Leonard's - it's a very successful grocery chain (only 3 outlets

in CT & NY).

Outside their stores they have a large paper-maché boulder with

Rule #1 "The Customer Is Always Right"

Rule #2 "See Rule #1"

Employees are replaceable but customers are not;

it's frustrating for the employee but that's the nature of the

employment game.

Although what he did was not right, I do understand him. Even I get terribly annoyed at the people on the plane who don't listen.

I have been on a couple domestic flights in the US recently and it's been quite chaotic. The passengers don't sit down on time and flights get delayed because of that. Many don't go back to their seats during turbulences (I saw flight attendants yelling at passengers - go back to your seat! Now!). Also, turning off cell phones or electrical devices doesn't seem to interest anyone anymore. I had a lady next to me, answering her phone while we were landing in NYC while a douchy guy in front of me was showing off his iPad to a drunk college kid next to him.

I sure would have lost it with passengers a long time ago! I understand that he had it with the ####### he has to put up with on a daily basis.

My sentiments exactly.

I see the fact that he was gay not to be an issue,

but I don't know if he was kind of "nudged" into the

role of "enforcer" for errant passengers because he

happened to be male.

I could see a two-faced role of the airline in telling

attendants to make sure passengers don't get up

during takeoff/landing but then not backing them up.

Only folks that actually have or do work for airlines could answer that...

The number of people who get up off their seat and try to get their luggage from the overhead as soon as the wheels have touched down in amazing. It happens almost second or third flight I take. It's like they are either totally deaf, or too stupid to understand what they hear.

In my experience, this issue is mainly happens in the USA. Never had it flying around Europe. Why is that?

I am a fan of that flight attendant. Having personally flown over 1.5 million miles, domestically and overseas, mostly for work, I can appreciate his "exit" after 20 years of taking the major bullshite from no good passengers. People suck when travelling; and I am sure we have all seen disrespect to flight attendants at some point or another in our travels. Who among us would not revolt at some point? He lasted 20 years in the domestic flight arena, seriously? Most flight attendants strive for international flights, given the substantially increased income. This person chose to remain domestic, which is the least paying and most grief getting option.

Ok, he "broke the law", if there is one for his offense. I am sure the DA will drum up something to satisfy the others. In fact, already done...

I agree with all of the above. He's a very sympathetic figure.

However having said that, he may have stepped over the line

when pushed too far but I can't see serious charges sticking.

There will be some wrangling in the courtroom but the charges

may be dropped with the provision that he stay out of trouble.

Jet Blue put out a light-hearted video commentary on the

incident so I don't think they want to see him hoisted up

on terrorism/homeland security charges with the

outpouring of support he has gained over the last few days.

Breach of protocol, yes but nobody was harmed (except him).

Another matter is his lawyer wanting to get him re-instated

in his job which I think will take a lot more maneuvering.

After all, the point he was making was "I quit" so if he didn't

mean it, the purpose of his actions appears to be

"up in the air".

How does "I felt very frustrated and wanted to quit but

was temporarily insane while responsible for hundreds

of airline passengers" sound?

Did he forget to cry "gay bashing?"

Maybe his lawyer will remind him how important that

could be to his case. The gay issue just seems to be

a footnote here and not crucial to the defense or the

prosecution, but lawyers have a way of making issues

out of thin air.
