Slumdog star says Hollywood is racist

I wanted to add more of my thought on this. I still think some of what he says is true about the racism maybe, although I mentioned very successful non-white actors earlier. Dev has a British accent, that in itself might make it more difficult to snag top roles unless the movie involves British things, or you can fake an American accent, and if it doesn't involved anything British the audience is going to wonder when the actor moved to the US even as a character in a movie.

And even white guys who aren't very hot or studly don't get those certain roles that someone like Brad Pitt might. How about Tobey Maguire? He was a huge hit in Spiderman, I loved him in that role. But his role was a geeky guy who became a super hero. He didn't play a studly man. It's not just about race, it's about looks in general. A geeky person can still get really popular for roles, but probably not the same kind of roles as other actors.

just pointing out how the way things work can be perceived as being racist.

Thank you Captain Obvious.

It's based on a studio executives preconceived idea. That isn't "reality"

So "reality" plays no part in their preconceived decision? Are they not basing their hypothesis on something? Is that somethning "racism" and not "reality?"

You should probably ask yourself why homeless people ask white people for money. Racism? Or preconceived notion?

I could just as easily say that about the music nowadays. Its all about timing but in the end you do have to put something put together that is professional you will not be as big as John Wayne or Tupac.

What I want to know is why black folks shun real actors in favor of rappers. It's like, if you want to become a black actor, you have to go gold first. What's that all about. What business does TI have doing in a movie?

I liked Charlton Heston. Heston was also a better actor than John Wayne.

I think Heston was horrible in that movie. I liked the idea of the movie but watching it was painful. I think at the end when he seen The Statue of Liberty probably the worst acting ever, well second to "its a madhouse".

Plain and simple you and I alone dont decide who is the best and rather we like it or not BOTH Heston and Wayne will go down as great actors.

Any other story where the main character is based on a white person or the industry/lifestyle being portrayed is predominantly white.

What does this mean? If the story is about an upper middle class, white collar guy who lives in the suburbs, the actor cast should be white just because most people that fit that description are white?

Hugh Laurie has a British accent, and he fakes his American accent really well on House. Granted, House is a TV show and not a movie.. but still, I dont see his British-ness working against him.

No need to be an a$$. It apparently isn't obvious to some.

Sorry to be an @$$, but some people don't understand reality.

Denzel's a rapper?

No. But, how long did it take for Denzel to become a legitimate, big-time actor?

TI is starring in a big movie set to open soon. His first movie, by the way. Why the disparity? Does "street cred" really lend itself to "screen cred?"

 You probably like him for what you think he represents rather than his acting abilities, but that's ok, that's what many movie goers go to movies for. They'll see a movie because of who is in it rather than whether the movie itself is appealing to them. This is often regarded as being star struck. You happen to have a man crush on John Wayne. That's cool.

I think he was a good actor. I have only seen 1/4 of his movies. My favorite being 'The Cowboys'. The matter of the fact is that he was before my time and Im not a huge fan.

I think you hate him because he represented a lot of things about America that you dont like, be honest with everybody. This has more to do with that then his acting right?

Right. There have been others who do that well too.

Hugh Grant is popular here, even with his accent in movies. Though he wouldn't represent an average American very well unless he fakes the accent.
