But European kinda makes sense as long as you don't extend the definition too far east all the way into Siberia  (i have heard people do that. i believe in school i was taught europe ended at the urals.)

Do you prefer "Oriental"?

I honestly don't know what the accepted ethnic label for a person of chinese or japanese ancestry would be. Asian seems to be the common term that is used in the US to cover anyone from India to Japan.

"Oriental" was used a lot in the colonial days.

Actually, I like to call everybody east of the Urals and as south as colombo, "chinamen".

Chinamen immediately conjures up the image of chinese laundry or railroad workers from the late 19th century.

Almost as bad as "Chink", which you hear quite a lot in the South East of England. A common phrase I often overhear is "going for a chinky" to describe going for chinese food. Oddly enough you don't hear to equivalent for "Indian" food, which is always referred to as Indian - but probably because there is more sensitivity to racism against indians and pakistanis than there is to chinese people.

Interestingly enough I was on a bus yesterday and a very classy woman got on and was trying to get the driver to let her on for free with the very persuasive and well-thought out argument of: "Are we English or are we Pakis?".

Needless to say, the guy told her to eff off.

Plus, there aren't very many good slurs for Indian/Pakistani people. "Paki" never caught on outside the UK and "dothead" sounds like a goddamn cartoon character.
