Slumdog star says Hollywood is racist

Entirely the point Mr Simpson. If the biggest Asian actors in Hollywood come from foreign film markets it kind of suggests that Hollywood wasn't interested in them until they had established themselves outside of the Hollywood system. Which begs the entirely reasonable question: why are there so few domestic Asian actors in prominent film roles. Can you answer that?

The answer is one of the following:

1) there are few Asian film actors

2) Asian film actors tend to be worse actors

3) there is some degree of racial bias

As I said earlier. It's not about race, it's about money.

Hollywood makes movies that sell sell sell.

There's just not a market for Asians to be in the starring roles outside of lame-duck comedies/action flicks.

Just tell him to watch more Asian films that way he wont feel so damn guilty.

Who says there is no market. If roles on offer do not require an actor to be from a specific ethnic background then why does the disparity exist?

I think disparities exist in all sorts of places especially in the minds of ones who keep track. Why do you keep track?

I guess talking about Madhouse can get pretty boring.

casting decisions in major blockbusters are almost always about bums on seats and there are number of ways that this is measured (Q scores, performance of last picture, etc. If an Asian actor was like Will Smith or pre-meltdown Tom Cruise, they would have their pick of roles.

However, as international box office becomes more important (on average accounting for 60% of total global box office in Hollywood movies), you can bet on seeing more Asian faces in big movies - note the casting of Tony Jaa as Kato in Green Hornet, in spite of being completely unable to act in an English-speaking role

Agreed. I think the emphasis in this thread has been wrong. It's not specifically about casting decisions as it is about Asian actors getting into the Hollywood big leagues and why the current pantheon of big name actors includes so few Asians.
