Everything seems to be going good for it to be passed...what do you all think?? I don't remember things getting this far last time they spoke of a reform??

Yes, it's certainly been a while.

The last time a comprehensive immigration reform was considered in Congress was back in 2007 which failed in Senate.

The last time any immigration bill was considered was back in late 2007, the Dream Act, which failed in Senate.

I personally think that the reform will pass in Senate by a wide margin (well over the filibuster-proof 60). Whether the bill will survive in the House, however, I am pessimistic about it (or, I should say, cautiously optimistic).

If House fails to introduce/mark-up/pass its own immigration reform bill, the House has nothing to offer to Senate at conference committee. It will then have no choice but to take up and debate on the Senate's bill (which would be good for us, in my opinion). And whether the House can pass its own bill is far from being clear due to the political deadlock present there: hard-line GOPers who will oppose the Senate reform no matter what, and liberal Democrats who will support it against the hard-liners' stance. Moderate GOPers are basically silent, waiting for the momentum to build for more-or-less liberal reform with certain conditions on border and interior enforcement (whom Democrats would like to convince). If the deadlock remains this staunch (as seen from recent failure of farm bill), House will NOT be able to pass its own reform bill until the next mid-term in late 2014.

Even if moderate GOPers join with the Democrats, with Hastert rule promised by Boehner the Senate's reform bill is basically DOA. Even if significant border & interior security amendments are included in the bill (e.g. Corker-Hoeven Amendment), it's hard to say if majority of the GOP will support it.

For now, we can only wait and see. Unfortunately.

Next two weeks will be pivotal to this ongoing immigration debate. Let's hope the Senate passes the bill and many House GOPers join the cause.

Interesting article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/06/18/is-boehner-bluffing-on-the-hastert-rule-even-he-doesnt-know/

No one knows if the Hastert rule will be used on immigration

"Will immigration reform go the same way? That’s certainly the dominant theory in the Senate, and it’s fairly common in the House, too.

Here’s how it would go: The Senate passes an immigration bill in July. Then the House passes a much smaller, much more conservative bill in, say, September. The two bills go to conference, and it quickly becomes clear that the House bill is dead in the water: It’s going nowhere in the Senate, would be vetoed by President Obama, and is broadly loathed by the Hispanic community. After much huffing and puffing, the House and Senate emerge with something that looks more or less like the Senate bill, and Republicans, in order to protect the future of their party, decide to bring it to the floor and pass it with Democratic votes."

Sounds good to me. Hopefully it goes this way, signing the reform into law before October 1st.
