Just starting out on the immigration process from the ground up!

The basic no-frills story: I was over in Venezuela about 2.5 years ago on a church related trip. Met a girl, nothing happened! :)

At the time I didn't speak Spanish and she didn't speak English (I've since learned quite a bit of Spanish!!). About a week after I got back to the USA, we started talking on messenger, mostly through the use of a machine translator (ugh).... and well, the rest as they say is history! We almost never missed a day talking after that. I've been back a number of times since, although finances don't currently allow me to travel very often.

She has 3 years left in her University degree, so our timeline is somewhat fixed to that, but we are getting a head start on lining up all the paperwork now! First order of business will be to research and decide on a K-1 or a K-3 (although family there may strongly "encourage" the K-3 route!) Her family has been slow to swallow the idea of losing their little girl (understandable), so we are currently doing all the research quietly before deciding on a course of action.

Hello, and welcome to VJ!

Please read the link about K3 being administratively closed by NVC:

http://www.visajourney.com/news/2010/02/07/department-of-state-to-close-k-3-visas-if-i-129f-and-i-130-petitions-approved-and-received-together/

You can still file for K3 but most likely will end up getting CR-1/IR-1 visa instead.

Comparison between K3 and CR1/IR1:

Hi Patrick, thanks for the links!

I guess we'll be analyzing the K1 vs CR1 question then. K3 looks pretty worthless at this point!

Here is what I had tentatively planned and am trying to research the pros/cons of: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/268968-cr1-but-not-living-together-challenges/

PS: I just moved out of Cambridge, MA :)
