Riot squad called to 17th birthday party in Sydney

POLICE have shut down a birthday party in Sydney's north after revellers turned on officers and assaulted them.

Police went to the Town Hall on the Pacific Highway at Pymble at about 9pm (AEST) last night to speak with the organisers of a 17th birthday party after concerns were raised for intoxicated people running in and out of traffic along the road.

The officers used capsicum spray and called for urgent assistance after a brawl broke out and they were assaulted.

A large number of police from across the region, including officers attached to the Dog Squad and Public Order and Riot Squad, went to the Town Hall and the party was shut down.

Police had to temporarily close the Pacific Highway as hundreds of people left the party and converged onto the road.

As the revellers made their way along Grandview Avenue towards the railway station a number of small fights broke out and the window of a shop was smashed and pieces of artwork damaged.

One person was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital by ambulance after he suffered a laceration to his arm when a bottle was thrown at him.

Investigations into the organisation of the party, assaults and malicious damage are continuing and anyone with information that could assist police with their inquiries is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
