Working after visa approval?

Granted, the answer is probably right in front of me somewhere, but I blame the late hour for not being able to find it. So, here goes.

How soon after getting his approval and moving ehre can the Hubs get a job? I under stand the actual "greencard" will be mailed to him. Does he have to wait until that's physically in hand before he can work, or will simply having the approval with the actual card pending be enough? I've been so focused on the visa part, that i haven't spent nearly enough time learning about what happens afterwards.

The I-551 stamp he will get in his passport after entering the U.S. allows him to work.

he gets the stamp at the POE, a temp, 1 year I-551 document, in lieu of green card (green card comes in the mail, later)

but must have this I-551 document PLUS the SSN card, from the SSA office.

If speed is an issue, go in person to SSA office, apply.

A recent immigrant must be able to fulfill the requirements of the I-9 form, to be able to work as a W-2 employee.
