A guest worker program with a legal avenue towards citizenship, which encourages/demands that such immigrants become integrated into society (English literacy, etc.) could work. I used to work with a guy who was Canadian (he was here on an H-1 visa). His wife was a Chinese national. They now have two daughters, both born here in the U.S.. Without jus soli, which country should have given them citizenship? You see how complicated this could get? My friend was planning on getting his citizenship here, but was at the mercy of his employer who sponsored him. It caused him a lot of grief because he'd been working in this country for close a decade and wanted to provide some security for his two little girls.

i don't think the average american is suggesting that any future guest workers program provide citizenship. firstly, it would be a program restricted to skills we need and it would grant temporary right to work in the US. the guest worker program i'm thinking about is a rotational program giving many people the opportunity to come here to work - come work then go home over and over again.

the couple's situation above isn't complicated. the daughters have a right to canadian or chinese citizenship or maybe even both. if this couple were smart enough to get here on H-1 visa, they surely should be smart enough to handle a daughter born outside canada/china (there surely would be a process). one could state that jus soli complicates their situation because it gives american citizenship and so complicates the canada/china paperwork.

Oh, but that would be racist & bigoted, si man, in Dis Place AmeriKKKa. Furthermore, the guest worker would have to be registered to vote (Democrat), and specially driven to the polls on election days, in order to replace the deportee. Edited by TBoneTX

Dude, they are all third world countries. Is that the league you want the Unites States to be in? Not too sure why Canada is on the list since :

Section 3(2) of the Current Act states that Canadian citizenship is not granted to a child born in Canada if, at the time of his/her birth, neither of his/her parents was a Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident and either parent was a diplomatic or consular officer or other representative or employee of a foreign government in Canada or an employee of such a person.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

What's your interpretation?

Are illegal immigrants subject to the jurisdiction of the United States?

You fail to grasp the concept of a guest worker program. For a quest worker program to function, there has to be no path to residency or citizenship. Citizenship by birth would also need to be scraped. In reality, these programs are simply smoke and mirror for people like yourself, as you are pretty-much open to the entire world to move here. When asked how this is a good thing, how this will benefit the 60 million Americans living in poverty, what it will do to the environment, how will it affect the Q.O.L of Americans, you throw out generic ####### like: country of immigrants or they pay taxes or you're anti-immigrant.

His child would apply for citizenship as a Canadian and possibly in China. Same way if I have a child now, they're automatically granted Australian citizenship. Once we move to AUS, a child would automatically be a US citizen, because its mother would be American. Once again, this it's too complicated rubbish is a bunch of smoke and mirrors.

Speaking of Canada and their 21st century immigration system, they don't just allow anyone willy-nilly into the country. Considering immigration is not a right [nor should be], like most other first world countries, they understand you have to screen and select immigrants. Furthermore, rather than turn into some overpopulated third world country, they want to continue delivering a high Q.O.L for their citizens and new immigrants. After all, the Canadian government's responsibility [first and foremost] is to do what's in the best interest for Canadians, not third world countries. One again a no-brainer and hence their super-high Q.O.L.

Here is an exert from who is eligible for a visa. Keep in mind this is adjusted accordingly and depending on the country's needs. AKA a no-brainer.

For your application to be eligible for processing, you must include the results of your official language proficiency test, and either:

* have a valid offer of arranged employment, OR

* be a skilled worker who has had one year of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time paid work experience in at least one of the following eligible occupations within the last ten years:

  • 0631 Restaurant and Food Service Managers
  • 0811 Primary Production Managers (Except Agriculture)
  • 1122 Professional Occupations in Business Services to Management
  • 1233 Insurance Adjusters and Claims Examiners
  • 2121 Biologists and Related Scientists
  • 2151 Architects
  • 3111 Specialist Physicians
  • 3112 General Practitioners and Family Physicians
  • 3113 Dentists
  • 3131 Pharmacists
  • 3142 Physiotherapists
  • 3152 Registered Nurses
  • 3215 Medical Radiation Technologists
  • 3222 Dental Hygienists & Dental Therapists

It's painfully obvious to the sound mind that open borders don't work unless there's somewhat of an equality in economic strength between the countries that decide to take them borders in between them down. Open borders in an environment where we have the picture below...

Mexico: GNI per capita: US $9,980

USA: GNI per capita: US $47,580

...will result in the former being lifted while the latter drops. You're not lifting Mexico to the standard of the US. You're looking at lifting Mexico some and drop the US some to then have a picture where the above figures for both countries may be more in the range of, say, $25,000.00 - $30,000.00. The open borders crowd may find that desirable, I don't.

Steven lives in his own little world. To him all countries and cultures are equal. He has lived a sheltered life. And, YES, that is the league he wants the USA to be in. That is what the epitome of white guilt is all about. If you can't raise the standards of other countries you have to lower your own to be equal. ;)

Am I being to harsh? The posts tell the tale. Decide for yourself.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Quite true [and logical] Big Doooog. There are 1,001 logical reasons against open-borders with countries of huge economic disparity; furthermore, ensuring citizenship is only granted when one of the parents is a citizen. Can anyone seriously tell me one logical reason for automatically granting citizenship to everyone and anyone who steps foot and gives birth in the country?

Even immigration must be monitored and gauged, like Canada and the rest of the developed world does. No sane country in 2010 allows hordes of immigrants to enter, without actually evaluating their impact on a society, the country and even the environment. Yet to some here, country of immigrants is all the evaluation needed period - "This is America, Dammit!". The rest logically adjust their immigration quota based on need and economic climate, whereas, these guys advocate as many as possible enter, even in this economic environment.

Basically ignore that 100 years ago when manufacturing was booming and during the country of immigrants era, approx 90 million lived here. 310 million now live here; in addition, with close to the total population back then currently considered top be living in poverty.
