I won't lower myself to your level.

Well it will definitely be a first for you to stay on topic and actually attempt to have a discussion. In other words you are d___b.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Repeating that lie over and over won't make it become true. You need to read beyond the Right Wing rhetoric and actually read the factual history leading up the Birthright Citizenship Clause. You seem to have no basic understanding of what jus soli means. Aren't you British but now a naturalized USC? You owe it to yourself as a USC to at least know what the hell you are talking about or refrain from engaging in U.S. political discussions.

Quite the so-far-off-base-it's-not-even-funny diatribe from someone who doesn't understand how to answer a simple Yes/No question.

But I do know the rules regarding Canada since they apply directly to me and my children and the children in the above case are not automatically entitled to Canadian citizenship.

Canada has now instituted new Citizenship laws affecting so-called second-generation children born outside of Canada.

See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/citizenship/cit-rules-faq06.asp for details.

A child born after April 17 2009 outside of Canada to a Canadian-citizen parent who was born out of Canada does NOT derive citizenship from that Canadian parent unless one parent was born in Canada or became a Canadian citizen by immigrating there as a permanent resident and subsequently being granted citizenship.

You forgot to include the important part.

In the case of Steven's Canadian coworker, if he was himself born outside of Canada then his US born daughters (if born after April 09) would NOT be Canadian citizens. If, as those who would repeal the 14th Amendment would have it, US citizenship did not derive from birth in the US, these girls would have only one possible statehood to fall back on (China). The result being that children in such a case could very likely wind up stateless.

If the kids are eligibile for Chinese citizenship (not sure whether that would be the case), then they would not be stateless. They'd be Chinese. If they aren't eligible for Chinese citizenship and if that anecdotal co-worker was indeed born outside of Canada, then there would be a situation where the kids would end up statless if birthright citizenship is granted only to those children of lawful residents of this country. It's quite simple to conceive a solution to those - very rare - exceptions. It's not like having to re-invent the wheel. It's done elsewhere.

One of the biggest problems many Western European countries have been facing with immigrants is that they have had less integration or homogenization while the U.S. has not had that happen. Not yet at least. And there is strong indication that Birthright Citizenship is one of the contributing factors. Birthright Citizenship in this country means that this country, at least in terms of our Constitution, doesn't care where you came from, what you look like, or who your parents were - if you are born here, you become a citizen of the U.S.. Maybe that's a difficult concept for many Europeans to grasp, but it means a lot to us Americans who value the traditions and framework that made this country the great melting pot that it has always been since the formation of this country.

Really? Perhaps you should tell that to the American's who's great-grandparents were slaves.

That melting pot and integration you refer to is a bit of a pipe dream. An ideal that we wish would occur but it isn't really occuring. Go visit Little Addis in D.C. and tell me how much integration you see going on there. And do count the "integrated" Ethiopians there who barely speak any English, if they happen to speak any English at all.

You fail to grasp the concept of a guest worker program. For a guest worker program to function, there has to be no path to residency or citizenship.

Exactly. Guests must not be allowed to put down roots, otherwise they won't be "guests" for long.

Also keep in mind, your parents where here legally - which is fair enough. Big big difference versus people popping over here to have their baby alone. Both Canada and Australia allow for the kids of legal residents to be granted citizenship. The lack of two letters prior to legal makes a world of difference.

The UK, as well.

The UK had jus soli before 1983. I understand very well what it means, and why the law was changed.

As for refraining from engaging in US political discussions, screw you hippie.
