The fans cost 149 euros each though!

For 149 euros each, I'll hand-carry a few over there for you.

So what if we're going to implode on ourselves? That stuff is cheap!

I was thinking the same thing. $200 for a tiny desk fan is insane. The fan on my desk has been with me for two years now, and still works beautifully. Cost me $10 at Walmart.

So what if we're going to implode on ourselves? That stuff is cheap!

Are we waxing political now?

Nooooooo.... That would never happen in the RUB forum, would it?

I remember watching a show about Walmart and jobs moving to China and it focused on workers in Arkansas at a Briggs & Straton factory that made lawn mower parts. The new Walmart came in and they were so excited to be shopping there. Then, when their jobs got sent overseas they were super mad but still continued to shop at Walmart. "We have no choice. We have to keep shopping here, we can't afford to shop anywhere else."

And the downward cycle continues... I sure hope it doesn't happen, but I think 2012 is pretty accurate. Maybe somewhere in summer of 2012 the dollar will crash, the federal govt. will try to nationalize EVERYTHING but then we'll simply fall apart as the grid goes dark....

Sad, really. Greed is what's going to do us in. We make all this nice wonderful stuff, live awesome lives... but bite off more than we can all chew.

The phenomenon you assign to Walmart is really a natural result of our endorsement of and participation in Globalization. Washington's particular love of playing politics while neglecting economics -- and using economics to influence politics (particularly in the misguided case of trying to democratize China without bombs) is destroying our solvency far more quickly than Healthcare Reform ever could.

Moreover, I don't think it's our greed that will be our undoing, and probably not even our politicians' corruption. But the fact that this is a country more interested in bickering about gay marriage and the President's birth certificate than we are in international trade, economics, and domestic policy is what will kill us.
