A woman who says she was in a crowd detained by police for hours at a Toronto intersection during a G20 protest has launched a $45-million class-action lawsuit against the Toronto Police Services Board and the federal attorney general.

Sherry Good is acting as the representative plaintiff for more than 800 people who claim they were wrongfully arrested during the G20 summit in late June.

She is among about 500 people who were hemmed in by hundreds of riot police at the intersection of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue for several hours in the rain on June 27.

Good, who called herself an "ordinary person" not involved in organizing any protests, claims to have suffered a panic attack following the incident.

"But the biggest consequence of that weekend is that I have lost my trust in the police," she told a Friday morning news conference.

"Now I am nervous when I see a police car. I consistently look over my shoulder. Sadly, it will take a long time to regain that trust."

The Toronto Police Services Board is a civilian organization that oversees the force. It is being sued because "it is the legal entity charged with overseeing the majority of the police activity that took place that weekend," said Eric Gillespie, one of the lawyers representing Good.

The Attorney General of Canada has been named because "it is the legal representative of the RCMP, who also had a significant role, it appears, in the events that transpired at that time," he said.

The suit was filed Thursday at Ontario Superior Court, but the bid to certify the legal action — meaning it would proceed — will likely take several months, Gillespie said.

Around 1,000 people were arrested during the summit, which ran June 26-27 in downtown Toronto.

'No comment' from police

Meanwhile, Toronto police held a news conference to release pictures of five more people they are looking for in connection with vandalism during the protests.

"My message here today has nothing to do with the class-action suit," Det. Mike Carbone said when asked about Good's lawsuit.

"I have no comment about the class-action suit."

Police also displayed previously released images of six other people identified as people they believe may have been involved in some of the vandalism.

The news conference is the third in which police have released pictures in hopes the public can help identify potential suspects. Since the first news conference last month, 17 people have been arrested.

The panic attack hit her about the same time the class action lawsuit appeared no doubt. I can't recall a case where a class action lawsuit won against the police during a big event with the usual types of protestors and rioters.

If the cops hadn't been on the more violent protestors, a lot more people in Toronto would have lost their faith in the local cops.

Actually the "more violent" protesters were allowed to cause havoc.... then the cops just started attacking innocent people. One of the most disgusting displays of pigs showing their true colors.

You did, in the title to this thread

I said "Crimes by the Pigs"

and there were plenty in Toronto during the G20.

I didn't say "all cops are....."

You certainly did corky. This article, and your little comments show how little you know about law enforcement. You really should try a ride-along sometime for a glimpse. Until then, you really should refrain from your insipid comments, unless your goal is to come off as petty and insipid.

No one is talking about all cops.

I'm talking about the one's who were acting like pigs during the G20.

Then maybe you should watch what you post before you hit the "Add Reply" button. Furthermore, I have seen the coverage of the G20 police situation, and my wife was down there on the last day when they were rioting. The police acted as they should.

Oh yes, holding innocent people, women and children against their will is doing as they should.

Doing snatch and grabs from the crowd is what they are supposed to do to people who were protesting innocently.

Yup. That's it.

Get a real grip.

Cops got out of control trying to show some muscle.

Of course this is what happens when you bring in cops and military and mix them together from all over the country....

Protesting innocently? Have you actually been in a coma the last year or so? There were many many violent elements to the crowds and its hard to discern between the peaceful and violent at times. Easy to be a monday morning quarterback when you have no idea what it is like to actually do their job.

So citizens no longer have rights because a few people get out of hand? Glad to know how you feel about blatant abuse of power.

Of course the real "violent" elements were early on Saturday and they were allowed to run amok. Then the real protesters try and protest and the cops hound them? Sorry it doesn't work that way.

I was on 24/7 coverage/watching the G20 protests from here and Vanessa was downtown Toronto that day as well. Even the media that day was shocked by what went on by the police.

Paul, you clearly have no idea or clue what it is like to be a law enforcement agency. You also seem to not have much comprehension as to their roll in society. You really should try to arrange a ride-along, it is an eye-opening experience. I too was on the "other side" of that conversation with law enforcement and only after doing a ride-along and working in law enforcement have I gained a more informed perspective.

Sorry, liberties don't get trumped.

Been on a ride-a-long and you're right it is an eye-opening experience. Exactly why I don't condone the actions of the cops on the innocent protesters.

First of all Paul, you're talking about Canada, where the bill or rights and libertarian dogma is immaterial, second of all, you have no idea what law enforcement is faced with. Until then, i'll just consider you a neophyte commenting on something you have no grasp of.
