If he lives in a state that is close to Canada most have enhanced drivers liscences, its pretty cheap and he just needs to go to the DMV, but its ONLY valid for land travel, it won't work for air travel to other countries for example. As for a passport card (i'm not sure thats another term for the enhanced drivers liscence or something completely different...)

sorry just saw AZ not close to CAN :s .....

Yea I think it is what you are talking about though cause I think its only good for land travel, but he will be driving up here! I know its crazy far but he drives a Prius luckily good on gas lol... Cause we're gonna go back down after for a visit and its much! Cheaper to drive for me and one of my sons.

Passport card can be used for Canada by Land and sea only. You can no longer cross the border with the driver license, you will need the card.

The card is only for Canada and Mexico travel (as well as some islands I believe....) so if he is only going to stay in North America then go for it. But if in the next 10 years you might go to Europe or something you might as well get the full passport now.

If he wishes to fly to Canada he needs a passport. If he is able to drive and cross at a land POE he can use the passport card. The passport card may be the way to go right now if money is tight and he only anticipates land travel to/from Canada, but it would be a good idea for him to get a passport eventually as the passport card can only be used at land and water POE to Canada and Mexico and water entries to some of the Caribbean islands. With the passport he can travel anywhere and travel to Canada/Mexico/Caribbean by air.

One option is to fly to a US city somewhere along the border, rent a car and then drive across into Canada as well if he only gets the passport card.

what she said ;)

also, cards have RFID ... depends on how you feel about that as well.

edit: though i think by this year (2010) all the countries who agreed were supposed to have it in passports as well so passport probably has it too if you dont already have one issued.

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.
