Hi everyone,

So i am buying a one way ticket to US these days and i can't wait to be with my hubby again :D .

I have a couple of questions about things that i probably need to take care of before i leave:

In my country, i am an authorized translator/interpret for English and Spanish, i have an authorized license obtained from The Minister of Justice here and i also have a personal stamp. This license is in Romanian of course, so i would like to know if i need to have this specific document translated and legalized (by another translator since i am not allowed to translate my own official documents), so i can use it in the future in US, should the opportunity arise.

Another question i have is about my driver license,i have an European one( not international), i will be living in Florida and i wonder what are the State laws regarding ability to drive in US.

Thank you.

You will need to get a Florida driver's license when you arrive in Florida. But it's easy and cheap to get one (compared to e.g. anywhere in Europe.) Keep the Romanian as a souvenir or use it when you travel back home on holidays etc.

I'm not sure what needs to be done for your translator's license, but I'd be surprised if no one in translators' cafe wouldn't know the correct procedures for validating it http://www.translatorscafe.com/cafe/MegaBBS/category-view.asp?showall=true

Being 'certified' for translations in USA amounts to describing your credentials on the 'translated' documents. There you will, of course, describe them in english.

Example, you translate a document and when signing it, write "English degree, Univ Bucuresti, 2006" or wherever you went to school.

BUT--

You can also join The American Translators Association http://www.atanet.org/

But, the same would apply, you write your credentials (Where/when/what degree you have) PLUS you can say "Member of ATA". I would think the degree information is more important.

Contact ATA and see what they say.

Another thing you need to do is become a notary public in Florida. Then you can make certified / legalized copies AND translate and thats what most people need. http://www.flgov.com/notary_how_to

P.S. I need some things translated :)

Thanks alot for the info, i shall look into it. PM-me for anything that you need translated, i would gladly help you.Just so you know, i haven't registered with a public notary here in Romania, usually some translators do it, others don't. So, when is the POE? Mine is Sept. 10th, NY. Good luck !!

I advice you to transfer your credentials with www.WES.org

I don't know about Florida but in NJ you have to have a green card to get a driver's licence. You also need your Social security card, Bank statement and one utility bill to prove your address.

Ok, that website looks great! Lot of information there. I better gather all the papers i need, and it seems that i will have to deal with the DMV when i get in Fl. Thank you so much for your responses, you are so nice and very, very helpful!!
