Pregnancy and vaccines, to give birth in Canada

Hi All!

NVC just completed our case and we're waiting for an interview date. I am 24 weeks pregnant due on November 26. I'm worried about the medical exam because I haven't had the Tdap vaccine, I think I've had the MMR and I'm exempt from the Varicella one. We have quite a few concerns:

1) How do we speed up the interview? We would prefer to be interviewed by mid-October at most because it's difficult to fly (to Montreal)while pregnant.

2) The panel physician's website here in Vancouver says that the Tdap vaccine is required as it is not contraindicated for pregnancy. But my husband, who's a US doctor is completely against me having it while pregnant. Does this mean that I cannot have my medical completed? And then no interview and no visa before baby is born?

3)We were planning to have the baby born in Vancouver (as it might be too late for me to get medical coverage in the US). Supposing we get the visa before the baby is born, do I need to do any paperwork regarding the baby before making my US entry?

Thanks a lot!!!

I don't know about your first 2 questions. Let me answer the 3rd one.

Since you have palnned to give birth in Canada, your child will be Canadian citizen by birth. If your husband is U.S citizen and have been 'physically' in the U.S for the last 5 years excluding the short trips, he can transmit his USC to the child in Canadian U.S consulate by completing 'Consular Report of Birth' and getting baby's U.S Passport. Normally, this process is faster like 1 month or so, but check with Canadian consulate about their timeframe. Once the baby has the U.S passport, you both can enter the U.S.

You can try e-mailing Montreal for an expedite but unless it is a dire situation (like a serious illness or an immediate military deployment) they won't expedite. But it's taking 3-4 months for an interview so you're on track for an October interview with a July Case complete.

If the vaccine is medially appropriate and considered 'safe' for pregnancy then yes, you'll need it. Sadly a letter from your doctor husband won't do. You can try filing for an exemption based on moral grounds but this takes months to process and are rarely successful. Try e-mailing the physicians in Vancouver to ask. I have the one for Toronto/Montreal but they all work the same and have the same requirements. Ask them what happens if you have an incomplete vaccination record

When the baby is born you'll need to get the baby's passport and US citizenship recognition (if your husband meets the residency requirements). This can be done by:

Good luck with everything

Thanks to all for replying...

My husband and I have decided to stop worrying about this for now and just look forward to having our baby ;-)

But hopefully, we get an interview date some time in mid-December.

Double good luck for the newborn and the interview :star:
