Hi everyone, I don't know if I am in the right place but I have a quick question...I'm an us citizen, I sponsored my husband for his CR1 visa and he came into the country a year ago and was very lucky to get a job instantly but the only concern was that the company he works for didn't provide him with family health coverage, so we were unable to pay for the extra premium required to cover our 2 kids, So the only thing I thought of at that moment was to enroll them in Child Health Plus using my husband's pay stubs as an income verification...now a little stressed out because we started gathering all the proof and documents to start the process for removal of conditions...now the question is: will the enrollment into CHP affect the process for removal of conditions, is State Child Health Plus a part of the federal means tested public benefits??

thanks for your help!!

Hi garcestia,

First of all, I believe that all children should have health insurance, regardless....

After all, what's more important than health, especially healthcare for children....

And yes, the CHIP healthcare program (though I'm not sure if that refers to child health plus) is a means-tested benefit, as stated on the I-864 forms.

Second of all, are your children US Citizens?

If they are...Then you should have no problems applying for Child Health Plus (or any other government program) for your children, since they are US Citizens and entitled to such due to US citizenship status, regardless (though there are other factors such as income and resouces which have to be factored in too).

Third of all, if your children are US citizens....The sponsorship agreement does not apply to them...So it's ok for them to get government-sponsored healthcare.

Now if your children are not US Citizens..That's a different story....They might not be eligbile if this is the case...

Fourth of all, you (as the mother) are a US citizen. And likewise, you are entitled to apply for any government program too, as the sponsorship agreement does not affect you either. You can also apply on your kids' behalf with no problems as again, you are a US citizen, no problems.

Definitely inquire with the State regarding this issue too.

As well, other factors such as income, resources, assets, etc. are also factors that can determine eligiblity for government programs. So again, you're going to have to inquire about that too..

Alternatively, there are other programs and/or payment situations (community helath department clinics, sliding scale payments, etc.) that you can get lealthcare for your children at reduced cost/free too. So inquire about those as well.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your journey and good luck in finding good healtcare for your children.
