I'm a permanent resident now, I just entered in July. I have not received my green card yet. When I applied I checked the box that I want the embassy to apply for a SSN for me (I went thru DCF), but im not sure now did they do that or not. If they didnt, can I apply for a SSN while im outside the US (By mail for Eg?) ?

It's possible, but it's going to be a slow process. If you haven't been assigned an SSN you will need to apply in person somewhere. If you are going back to the U.S. any time soon, I would just wait until you go back. What country are you in right now?

I'm in Canada right now and I might not be able to go to the US soon. Is there anyway I can know whether I was assigned a SSN or not? If i was not assigned one how to apply by mail?

If one has not been assigned then you need to visit SSA... it is not done via mail

YMMV

OK that makes things a bit easier.

SSA will not give out SSNs over the phone, so you will need to go into an office to determine if you have been assigned an SSN, or if an application is pending. If you haven't been assigned an SSN and it has been at least 21 days since you entered the U.S., you can also apply for an original SSN and card. Keep in mind how hard it's going to be to follow up on the application if you need to go back to that office.

You can go into one of the Social Security offices located along the United States/Canada border. You can find list of these offices on our Web site:

Congratulations! I just received my Residence card myself thru DCF Riyadh KSA. I arrived at Alanta (POE) last July 2 and waited for my Greencard and SSA card in mail as I expected it to be processed as stated in the DS-230 Part II form I filled up in US Embassy Riyadh. Unfortunately, it didn't come. After 3 weeks of waiting I decided to go to an SSA office and verified if there is a pending SS application for me. I was informed that there is none. I applied for my SS number on the spot using my passport, dropped to the same office to get my number after 2 days and received my SS card in the mail after 2 weeks. In your case, I'm not sure if there's an SSA office in Canada where you can apply. But I recommend you apply for one as soon as you can.... Goodluck!

There are no SSA offices in Canada. You can apply at a U.S. embassy or consulate, but they are just going to forward the application to one of the SSA offices along the border. So if possible it is better to apply at an SSA office. That way you know the application got there.
