ooooh.

I will be moving soon with my 10 remaining tins of Heinz Baked Beans in tow. There was a closeout on dented tins of the real-deal English sort at the 99-cent store some months back, and I got about 20 of them.

Nik and I found some baked beans which he has proclaimed as close enough to Heinz for his taste: Bush's Baked Beans - vegetarian style. There are a lot of different varieties, I can't remember right now if we got the brown sugar one or something else, but if you hadn't experimented with those yet they might be worth a shot. The sauce in the one he liked was really different from the one with bacon we got to compare, so....when you run out that might be the next thing to try.

Not the point. You want a particular flavour. In my case, I want Heinz Baked Beans. I love homemade baked beans, but they aren't the same with a full English.

For youse in CA, AZ, & Vegas, Fresh & Easy carries the Heinz beans, and for a reasonable price too.

I've grown a huge love of corn on the cob since moving here, which I never ate in the UK. I'm addicted.

my husband grills the best corn on the cob.. he takes the cob and puts it on foil and then puts some butter, salt, pepper, some chopped onion and a little lemon juice and then wraps it up and grills it .. mmmm sooo good... sometimes we will eat it with mayo and Parmesan cheese.. best foods mayo is the best for that... I have another kind of mayo right now and it doesn't taste as good on the corn :P

oh really? I shop there so I will have to look for them next time... I don't like the tomato based beans that I find in most stores.. :P I love beans on toast and I haven't really had proper beans on toast in so long...

also the Fresh and Easy ketchup has no HFCS so it tastes pretty similar to Canadian Heinz ketchup......

I am also addicted to Mexican food.. back in Canada the closet to Mexican we had were those taco kits :P

there is this place in LA that makes the best enchiladas and beans ...mmmmm

You forget salt. I was SHOCKED in Scotland that the soda has about 0 salt in it. SHOCKED...and it still tasted fine. I wish they would cut that ####### back here.

I managed to get Rob hooked on it too. The funny thing is, he doesn't know it yet, but he's hooked on Tex Mex as well as authentic Mexican food. :) He tried to get me to make Mexican for him in Scotland, which was a disaster by the way.... OLD EL PASO brand is NOT Mexican food.

Andrew,

Welcome to the South....or mid-west-ish. The weather in this area is absolutely unpredictable. I'm in Arkansas, the state below you, and tornado sirens, hot and humid weather, and unpredictable winters are all part of the joys of living in this region!

For different types of cheese and fare similiar to home for you, I believe Sam's Club has a particularly large cheese section, and I know they sell lamb there if that helps. A-1 Steak Sauce is similar to brown sauce if you're a brown sauce eater. This time of the year is also the best time of the year to try and get your hands on homegrown tomatoes if there are any around. They're so much better than store purchased tomatoes! If you think of anything you are particularly missing and craving, let me know, I might be able to point you to a store. Oh and bread...try the bakery sections of grocery stores, and not the "bread" aisle. I noticed they tend to be more like UK bread.

I have to tell you, I think it's odd you feel like Missouri is nothing like England! When I landed in Manchester, I got off the plane and thought, "I just flew 4k miles to go to a place that looks JUST LIKE ARKANSAS!!!". Perhaps it is because you are used to major cities, and I am used to a more rural environment. This whole STATE has just under 3 million people in it.

I am sorry to hear you are having bouts of homesickness. I can't imagine that anyone wouldn't, but it's refreshing to see you have a great attitude about meeting people in church, and appreciating the new friends and family you're making. I am sure it will help ease your way!

I hope you continue to do well and thrive in your marriage and life! :)

Thanks for the welcome :) I pop over to Arkansas sometimes to Fayeteville - have a sister in law and her husband who live there. Some decent shops that sell british stuff there too ;) Almost all of Bethanys relatives live in the same town as us (which freaked me out a bit to begin with!) but a bunch of them grow their own veggies and stuff so we do manage to get homegrown tomatoes and stuff which is great. Like I said, foodwise I do fine here, Bethany is a great cook and I can bake good bread and stuff. Arkansas and Missouri do have parts that look similar to England, but only in the countryside! Every town is just so alien! But hey, I actually really enjoy living here so it's fun to me. Everything is so spread out it's just amazing. Plus rent is cheap here! :D

Oh yeah, to those talking about corn on the cob - I hear you! Man, I can't get enough of the stuff! unfortunately it's the one thing Bethany doesn't seem to like! Doh!

I'll have to keep Fayetteville in mind for the shops then! It's a bit of a drive from here, but if he really HAD to have something, I would take him to get it! It's actually odd to me too for a family to all live in the same town. My Dad was in the military so our family is all over. I have cousins who just graduated with a Masters Degree from University, and I haven't seen her since she was about 6...Bleh!

For anyone in California, World Market has a lot of British/international stuff. It's a bit expensive, but needs must sometimes :)

My fiance (USC) grew up in England, and notices there's a lot of "British" brands in Canada (I point out, are they really just British if they're in Canada, too?! ..haha)... anyway, there are some similarities, at least in Nova Scotia, in case anyone is ever visiting!

I hope your transition is going smoothly, and glad to see you enjoying the US!
