You would have to take your EAD and passport to Social security office and get an SSN - they should be able to give you the number in two days, and the card would arrive in the mail in a week. SSN is required for driver's license in California.

obnancy's (a June filer) ASC is also Chula Vista, and when she got turned down there for an early walk-in she drove to the San Marcos ASC and got accepted there. She said it was a ghost town.

I didn't know you could go to a different ASC. San Marcos is a little far from here, but it's surely worth a try. Thanks for the info.

Do you need to notify USCIS or the original ASC that you walked in somewhere else? I read in their letter that if you don't show up they consider your application abandoned.

As long as the walk-in at a different ASC is before the scheduled appointment, there would be no problem. You don't need to notify USCIS unless you are going to 'miss' the appointment, without already having your biometrics done.

ok thanks. do they give you a sort of receipt that you had your biometrics taken? You know, just in case for some reason something goes wrong and the first ASC notifies USCIS that I didn't show up and USCIS does not see that I did everything somewhere else.

Yes, they do. They stamp and sign your biometrics letter and give it back to you as a receipt.

Besides, they scan the barcodes on your appointment letter - which puts your data in their database.

My AP was touched again today. I guess they sent me the document. Still waiting for the bio appointment: I have a copy of it, but I guess I can't use that for an early walk in.

Anyway it should be here at latest on monday, because it was sent out 2 days ago.
