...One day I was walking down the street with 2 JOCV's (Japanese

Overseas Cooperation Volunteers) and they called CIA! at me.

To my Japanese freinds, they called China! China! China!

which really pissed off one who shouted at them "No, we

are Japan!"

- to which the boys replied "Japanese Imperialist Running Dogs!"

(My Japanese friend turned to me and said, "it was better when we were China...")

I went to the Peace Corps first to Afghanistan. I was there 4 months and the English

teaching position did not materialize after I completed the training. The king had

been deposed but this was pre-Russian invasion. From everything I've learned &

experienced about the country the Afghans are among the most tenacious in the

world and it doesn't matter if a friends comes with soldiers, soldiers in their land

are automatically enemies and their only ideology is Islam; everything else is

secondary. Sometimes bureaucratic snafus or political unrest (in the case of

Ethiopia) prevent PC teachers from doing what they came to do.

After a few months back in the states I went to Ethiopia and arrived there around

3 days before Haile Selasse was deposed. After a while the new military

government installed themselves as the "dirgue" (shadow) and proclaimed

"Ethiopian Socialism" which promped everyone in the street to stop me and

ask me "what is socialism?" to which I replied everybody gets to share and

live together peacefully....

The difference in Ethiopia was that I no longer wanted to be a teacher but

signed up for the Smallpox Eradication Program (World Health Organization).

The PC teachers, because of the political situation, either taught very little

or just sat around waiting for the Ethiopian teachers & students to stop their

long-term strike against the government.

I did smallpox vaccination in the countryside, going to remote villages (sometimes

by helicopter) and assisted by an Ethiopian student who was my translator.

It was sometimes dangerous but always rewarding.

During the "kerempt gizee" (rainy season) when I couldn't work due to impassable

roads I went to France to study french (for a few weeks) and then returned to Ethiopia.

Having a French girlfriend in Paris was nice...but it didn't work out in the end.

Thanks for sharing.

I haven't laughed so hard in a while. Your life sounds so interesting! I can't believe you helped with the smallpox eradication.

One shot for a murder AND suicide? That's some good shootin!

Well, he strangled her and then shot himself later. Duuuhhh.

It's not perfect. It would not show up in the Booties thread, for example. You can't bounce any quarters off of it anymore. But those that appreciate it, like it a lot.

And I'm sure your bum is perfectly lovely.

Well, you could bounce a canadian quarter, or a 2 euro coin off her bum

Highly inappropriate, seeing as you have actually seen my (clothed!) bum. Not doing a lot to salvage my already tarnished reputation as the VJ ####### of Babylon.

Hmmmmm how does that diminish your reputation on VJ? I suppose some people on these boards will have certain opinions of others regardless of any sort of fact. I imagine your political views will determine what many people think you look like as much as an actual picture would.

Back on topic. My most recent poo looked like a shaved squirrel
