Ouch! My bad

When I was in the Peace Corps in Ethiopia I happened on a restaurant in an out-of-the way place that had beets, which were UNKNOWN in any other place in the country.

I had some serious red poo-poo and I had

the PC doc give me tests for exotic tropical

diseases but it turned out that's what beets do. Now I know if there is some red in there, it's only the BEETS.

Thongd4me,

Wow, Peace Corps? I've never met anyone that worked there, and still haven't (other than online). How was that experience?

To the OP, given my service around the world, I have experienced just about all known in that regard.... However, and since the beginning, I know what to eat/drink and not, in most places. This results in medically expected output.

I am a big fan of fiber cereal though, while now stateside. Side affects would be another topic alone.

You said you had a nice butt. I believe you.

My boyfriend would agree with you, but believe it or not I keep those pics for his eyes only. Trust me, it's a nice one if your tastes run towards Latin women's behinds.

I went to the Peace Corps first to Afghanistan. I was there 4 months and the English

teaching position did not materialize after I completed the training. The king had

been deposed but this was pre-Russian invasion. From everything I've learned &

experienced about the country the Afghans are among the most tenacious in the

world and it doesn't matter if a friends comes with soldiers, soldiers in their land

are automatically enemies and their only ideology is Islam; everything else is

secondary. Sometimes bureaucratic snafus or political unrest (in the case of

Ethiopia) prevent PC teachers from doing what they came to do.

After a few months back in the states I went to Ethiopia and arrived there around

3 days before Haile Selasse was deposed. After a while the new military

government installed themselves as the "dirgue" (shadow) and proclaimed

"Ethiopian Socialism" which promped everyone in the street to stop me and

ask me "what is socialism?" to which I replied everybody gets to share and

live together peacefully....

The difference in Ethiopia was that I no longer wanted to be a teacher but

signed up for the Smallpox Eradication Program (World Health Organization).

The PC teachers, because of the political situation, either taught very little

or just sat around waiting for the Ethiopian teachers & students to stop their

long-term strike against the government.

I did smallpox vaccination in the countryside, going to remote villages (sometimes

by helicopter) and assisted by an Ethiopian student who was my translator.

It was sometimes dangerous but always rewarding.

During the "kerempt gizee" (rainy season) when I couldn't work due to impassable

roads I went to France to study french (for a few weeks) and then returned to Ethiopia.

Having a French girlfriend in Paris was nice...but it didn't work out in the end.

Thanks for sharing that  I always love to hear peace corps stories. When I was in high school, I started talking to this old lady who used to live by herself next door. It turned out that she had spent most of her life in the peace corps teaching rice farmers in Zimbabwe on how to grow shrimp when their paddy fields are flooded.

I don't consider myself a hero but I did have a very small role to play in the eradication of smallpox from the world.

A quirky fact about smallpox (fantata) in Ethiopia was that it was a very old disease there to which the local

population had developed a limited natural immunity. When they got it, it took the form of "variola minor"

which is no more dangerous than measles in the US. However, if anyone not having such an immunity

came in contact with an Ethiopian infected with variola minor, they could contract "variola major" which is

the dreaded smallpox that killed so many Europeans and also ravaged India.

Because smallpox was not feared in Ethiopia as it was in other countries, we had to do a lot of

PR to encourage them to accept vaccination.

Many PC volunteers did make unique contributions like your friend which may have been unsung in

the press because they affected so few people. But to those few people, they meant a great deal.

I think being in the PC made a great difference in how my life turned out after that,

regarding both work and my personal life.

top secret badges don't appear to be anything special. unless one knows how to read the codes on it, they look just like the rest of the stinkin badges.

I used to read those stinkin badges. Nothing special. They're actually quite basic. You'd think if something was top secret it would at least be digital. Some of them are now but for a long time they looked like a 3rd grader could make them.

My current apartment complex is home to a certain murder-suicide so when I say where I live, that's all I get. (And yes, I did hear the shot.)

One shot for a murder AND suicide? That's some good shootin!

I do believe you that they are only for him.

So his wife doesn't get to see them?

Are there a lot of spooks in the PC?

Not to my knowlege - I can't speak for the staff or administrators...

When I was walking down the street in a big town (lots of high school

boys hanging out because school was pretty much cancelled for

2 years when I was there) the boys would sometimes taunt us

with cries of "CIA! CIA!" which we pretty much ignored. They weren't

violent but only wanted to annoy us because they probably saw

the local newspaper spouting the government's current anti-US line.

One day I was walking down the street with 2 JOCV's (Japanese

Overseas Cooperation Volunteers) and they called CIA! at me.

To my Japanese freinds, they called China! China! China!

which really pissed off one who shouted at them "No, we

are Japan!"

- to which the boys replied "Japanese Imperialist Running Dogs!"

(My Japanese friend turned to me and said, "it was better when we were China...")
