Yep, the title sounds mean and uncaring. I wonder what Gates does after they save the children? Is Gates creating jobs for them? Does the children have much to live for?

6 biilion people on earth and Gates wants to save some, as if we haven't enough? While the tech industry reduces the need for manual labor, Gates is saving them so they can sit idle while machines take their jobs. Gates saves them and then leaves it to the world to feed them and give them jobs? Doesn't saving them create more need? Should not people be allowed to die if they can't survive from means provided locally? Should foreigners interfere?

Tough questions, I know.

THE BIG QUESTION: if you had Gates' money, where do you think it would do the most good?

It's like the pro-life folks. "Save the unborn bastards." (But don't let them move to my neighborhood!)

The big question - if I had Bill Gates money where would it do the most good?

I'd build a HUGE wall on our borders, give every able-bodied person an "assault rifle" and lots of ammo, finance political campaigns for "normal folks" to run for office and I'd see to the overhaul of "the system." But, I don't know if even Bill Gates has that kind of scratch.

You wouldn't have to enslave them if you had Gates money, they'd work for the right to stay with you.

History is littered with the philanthropic generosity of rich people - much research into disease and medicine has been accomplished in this way - in fact, a lot of inovation and research would never take place if it were not for these people.

Also, to the OP, I suggest you actually reserach what charitable organisations aim to, and do achieve - it's not simply keeping starving Africans alive long enough to shuffle to the next stage of suffering, although yes, that can happen, more's the pity.

Not to mention the tax benefits!

I like when rich people are labeld as "philanthropic" and "generous." It makes a nice counterpoint to "greedy." (Especially when they donate really large sums of money.... that equal pocket change to them.)

scary to think of you as the judge of what normal means, but don't take offense, scary what steven would judge as normal too.

no doubt, however Gates focuses on providing run of the mill medicine to the 3rd world. the drugs Gates Foundation are providing are way beyond the research stage. Gates says many children don't get vaccinated so they provide a lot of vaccine. hopefully the vast majority of kids Gates Foundation are keeping alive aren't uneducated, unemployed wards of the state with a lot of kids later in life.

if i were Gates, given the world's population and limited resources, i don't think i'd focus on keep people alive. my focus would be dedicated to educating people. educating people would serve the world better, it seems.

The UN and many charitable organizations focus on education. Children are prioritized when it comes to countering poverty and suffering. Most people do not view the suffering of children as something acceptable - providing vaccinations that ward of childhood diseases relieves suffering and provides these children with opportunities they would not otherwise have. Of course, we could end suffering by providing them with a syringe of cyanide instead of vaccinations. Would that be preferable in your view?

the UN is one thing and the Gates Foundation is another. there is a mountain of difference between them. my question and the OP was purely about the Gates Foundation. i prefer not to inject politics into this discussion.

the question was something like this: if you had Gates Foundation money, what would you do with it? care to say? let your imagination run wild.... let the tiger loose!
