I noticed my phone calls to Ghana were getting shorter before having to add more credit with Skype. Then I checked the rates and they have recently increased from about $0.16/min to a whopping $0.28/min.

Has your provider increased rates to Gh or anywhere else in the region? There was a discussion a few mos ago that dealt with rates... I'd like to know if your rates have increased and what you are paying now.

Really- I didnt notice mine had changed- They now have set plans (which i have been waiting for!). If you pay for the year you get the best rate. I dont know how many minutes a month you use but I think its well worth it- and then when your fiance comes they can use it to call home.

It was 191.00 for the year with 150 minutes a month. Or you can do 120 minutes at 15.99 a month and there is another smaller one.

Now that you say it I just looked- they must want us to get monthly plans! .28 is way toooo high....

I dont know what other pay.

We use raza.com The plan that we get is $10. and it gives us many hours of talk time. When you sign up you can put 3 numbers in which you will be calling from. It's very easy to use. Hope this helps.

Who do you use? I do much more than 150 mins per mo (in fact, it's more than 150 mins per week).

I use skype. But now I had to get the plan. I dont know what my average was before- but now I will limit myself to 150 since if you go past that its .28 a minute. We text a lot which is free with US Cellular internationally (same as a regular text if you have a plan). and we chat on fb. So we dont talk only a little a week. So 150 should work for the next few months.

With the 150 you get about 30-35 minutes a week. Depending on the month. Hope that helps!

Marcel and I use RYNGA and it is only .03 cents/min to call Cyprus and .05 to call Nigeria. It has been the cheapest for us.

www.rynga.com It's easy to set up an account. you do have to download the file, but it is easy and there are instructiosn I believe.

Also, the amount you add is in euro so just be aware of that.

I guess they all went up! What a shame-

I got the year for 191- its seems that at least for now being locked in for a set amount of minutes at .11 or .10 a minute is a good thing....

I use Skype. I also use calling cards and they all went up. If I purchase a 250 minute card it only lasts 190 minutes. I called the card provider and they said it is because of state and local taxes, which may also be the reason Skype suddenly went up. I wasn't even aware that international calls could be taxed like that.

On the up side, Skype has added subscriptions to Ghana. For 16 dollars I think you get 120 minutes. On the down side, the subscriptions are small, only 60 or 120 minutes available right now. I wrote and complained and they replied that they will consider adding larger subscriptions.

You can also buy multiple subscriptions with Skype. You can buy a 60 minute and a 120 minute, adding up to 180 minutes total, but you can't buy more than one 120 minute subscription, so 180 is the max (which lasts us about three days).

We supplement with phone cards for now. I buy Pearl of Africa cards at a Ghanaian store. They are $4 each and last about half an hour. But you can get cheap phone cards at a lot of international stores. I also use Nobelcom.com cards.

Jen thanks for the info about multiple subscriptions. If you do the year- you save some money which is nice. I did that- since I know once my fiance is here he will want to call home too!

The other thing we could do is make multiple accounts and get multiple subscriptions. The new subscriptions are cheaper then what we were paying before so it seems that we would all be okay doing something like that and just printing out multiple pages of phone calls.

I will also email them- maybe if enough of us do they will add longer ones!

Great ideas! I will look into these subscriptions and other options mentioned. Since I noticed the rate change, I started back using the phone cards some. CTA Africa doesn't seem to have gone up that much or at all. I just have to still use Skype or another VoIP that keeps a log of phone calls to present as evidence to my fiancee's interview.

Keep 'em coming.

I can pull up our entire history of calls on Rynga very easily. I wonder how I can see how much it would be to call Ghana...hmmmmm well I hope you find something cheaper. Also, you can send a tex message from Rynga. Good luck!
