Hello people :)

I would just like to know what happens when your visa is approved and you enter the US and are getting ready to marry. I'll be applying for the marriage licence soon in South Carolina. For US citizens it asks for social security numbers, i'd be new to the country and won't have one yet...is there some way I can still apply for a marriage licence or are the rules diffrent for immigrants? Will I get some form of document at the port of entry that will allow me to aquire a marriage licence? I ticked the "yes" to question 43A and B to get a social security number automatically sent to me upon arrival, do they issue a cover note for it or anything once you arrive? Any help from people who have been through the process or are in the knowing would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help, when i'm done with all this, i'll be writing a long detailed help page from start to finish of the whole process including every single small detail :) The whole process has almost given us anxiety and panic attacks from start to finish and i'd like to help people who are in the same boat as us get through this heart-pounding ordeal in one peice and make sure there are no big suprises along the way ><

Asking for a SSN on a form does not mean it is required to get the license. You won't get anything from the POE regarding a marrigae license. "Ticking" the box on the DS-230 does not apply to K-1 visa holders. You are eligible to apply for a SSN after arrival, just march on down to the SSA and apply

A very good point, never realised the form might mean it's asked for but not required, some sources say they might only ask for one number. I'm guessing all I would need to do for the SSN is to fill out the form SS-5 and return it, or just walk in and apply.

Thanks very much for your input, it's appreciated :)

A K-1 must walk-in to apply for SSN

Since this is not a K-1 visa issue, I will move thread to different forum

A SSN is typically not required for non-citizens. As a K1 beneficiary, you are not a citizen. Ergo, it does not apply (unless you have applied for and received your SSN already).

You should probably call up the court house to ask if a foreigner needs a SSN. Good luck!
