bringing engagement ring into US from Canada

Hi everyone,

My fiance bought my engagement ring in the US, and brought it up to Canada to propose. I don't think he declared it to Canadian borders at the time. Now that I'm about to move to the US on my K1 visa, I'm wondering if I have to declare and pay tax on the ring, if it was bought in the US and is now "returning" to the US as opposed to being "imported" into the US. We have the receipt of where he bought the ring. If anyone knows anything about this, I'd appreciate your help! Thanks!

Just wear it, and no one will give a ####### about your ring. Unless the ring is worth over 10k and you tell them it was not declared initially, this is a non issue.

I've never heard of anyone getting grief over an engagement ring. As you said before, it was bought here, its intended use was here, as you're an intending immigrant. It was never an import to be sold.

Just wear it!

They probably won't even look at your finger and they're not going to know unless you tell them. Why pay duty on something that was a 'gift'? Don't give them an excuse to extract any more money from you!

Wouldn't this fall under the category of personal property? When you move on your K-1 you are allowed to import your personal items duty free. When I moved I just assumed my ring is just one of my possessions. Nobody brought it up, so neither did I.

Sounds like no one had any trouble at POE with this. I will just wear it when I cross the borders then. Thanks for the advice everyone!

One could send cassie a PM, as she is a Cdn Customs officer!! I'm sure 99.999% have no problems! I do recall 1 person that did have an issue with bringing thier engagement ring back to Canada! I can't recall the whole story, but I think she brought the matter to the attention of the POE guard, who then did charge duty on it. Not sure why anyone would do that,lol

no one will ask if it's on your hand. it's not being imported or anything. and he paid tax on in in the USA when he bought it. why would you pay tax again?
