Portable hard drives conk out. If they do then do not take them to someone to fix. If a laptop has been stolen and the wife says if you had deleted those certain pics just tell her yes.

I am sure they do go out if abused or over used.

The ones I use for storage are activated only when adding or removing files.

My oldest one is almost 6 years old.

I see you logic about what to tell her but I like most guys would fear the wrath if she found out it was a lie and the pics were made public.
