Why are you still here? Sounds like a great offer.

A move takes time. After all, everything is on contract here.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Public employers are last to get their 3% during boom times and that is reality. When everyone was killing it prior to the crash, police and teachers in my area had to live in WV because they couldn't afford to live where they work.

Republican mentality is cut cut cut. Then when a foreigner like myself points out that this and that is ####### here, you have not-Gary claim it's as good or better than everywhere else; because he says so.

Tell me this, public servants are paid more than those in the private sector in AUS - average over $55K. So why is no state or the country neither bankrupt or even struggling if this anti-government rhetoric is true? In fact, I received a job offer to work for the AUS government, worth well into the six figure range and with an offer of an additional 16% deposited into a retirement account. Not to mention, a company car and a range of other fringe benefits that are reserved for management alone here.

When I joined the Horsforth Urban District Council (Now known as t'urban district council) in the 60's , they told me that in the hard economic times, it was the place to be as there was job security. The cost of that was lower salaries than in the private sector.

In the good times, the people in industry look down on the low salaries of public employees and sneer. When those same people are struggling in the next recession, they criticize the public employees for their job security

This is what I was told in the 60's on my first day at work

Things don't change much

You've been intending to move for years. Wrap things up already.

This coming from another Repub living it up in an Ultra Lib state. At least walk the talk and go live in a poor Red state, where you pay low taxes and get nothin.

I said about 105 times now that Feb-2011 is the date.

The thing here is that the same people who demand government workers be paid peanuts, then complain about the service and call it inefficient. Conservatives down-under at least had the common sense and know-how, in other words no Palins, to realize that if you want the government to be as efficient as the private sector, you have to operate it like the private sector; which includes paying those who perform well.

The US environment is also funny because the same people who hate on government workers or anything government, turn a blind eye to everything negative the private sector does. You'd think MCI, ENRON, shoddy lending, oil spill, record bonuses when companies are being bailed out never happened; well that's what they want you to think. And middle-America buys that ####### like it's covered in crack.

Some public service jobs are good in the US too

Not talking about teachers and police officers etc who are just seen as cannon fodder here - but the more intellectual jobs can be quite rewarding.

Not that teaching isn't intellectual, but in the US it's more akin to lion taming in many inner city schools

Take my wife...

(!!!!)

She is working for a public institution and makes more than I did as Finance Director of quite a large group of companies in the UK - and that's allowing for inflation

The Military are a public institution - cut there ? heck no, that's a sacred cow and the ONLY public institution that should always be spared

We have BG's and their neighboring villagers to kill now and forever - it's just that we haven't chosen them yet - but we know we will.

ps I though BG's were Barry Gibb and his brothers until recently. Now I know it's those with black hats.

PS On a side note, I am stilling waiting to know if you live in Clark County, Washington...

Read what I stated - Prop 13 is what has got a stranglehold on California's budget. Prop 13 was supported by then Gov. Jerry Brown. The Republican Party of California, however, would rather gut the state of important programs and agencies, than raising the taxes on the wealthy.

You need the rich and you cant tax them into oblivion. This is one of the many problems in California.

For many years Democrats have had there way in that state and to now try and blame the Republicans is ridiculous.

cannon fodder.. The audacity of asking to be paid enough to live in the county you work in.

True dat about the military here and ironically the most socialist organization [department] of them all. Not only do they get a blank check but can also do no wrong. Lose a jet worth $130 million... opps. They're at least protecting the country, so I'll give them that.

The real kicker is the private sector, who basically gets to do as they please; regardless of consequences to the country or We the People.

Americans are so simplistic

Tax income comes from foreign oil companies drilling in US waters

Foreign corporations like Toyota manufacturing here

Foreign tourists spending in Disney world

Big nasty US oil companies that everyone hates

Goldman Sachs etc

Why do Americans insists that these 'tax dollars' come from their next door neighbor ?

I will tell you why - because Americans are simplistic
