Hi there!

I recently married a U.S. citizen and will soon be sending out my I-130/485/131/765 package. :) I've been lurking around here for a while and finally decided to register.

I've seen all these posts about how terrible it is to leave ANY question blank, and I wonder, is this really that big of a deal? I understand that if a question is unconditional, it definitely makes sense to at least complete it with "None" or "N/A." But if a question is preceded by a condition such as "If <condition>, then complete the following..." or Yes/No boxes followed by "If 'Yes,' <question>," doesn't it actually make more sense to leave it blank if the condition is not met?

For example, these are questions I would definitely not leave blank:

  • "All Other Names Used"
  • "Current Husband or Wife (If none, so state)"
  • "Former Husbands or Wives (If none, so state)"

Two of these explicitly ask not to be left blank, whereas the first one could be considered an omission if left blank since there's no condition attached.

The following, however, are questions that I would have normally left blank:

  • "If you are a lawful permanent resident alien, complete the following:"
  • "If separate petitions are also being submitted for other relatives, give names of each and relationship."
  • "Have you ever before filed a petition for this or any other alien? [ ] Yes [X] No. If 'Yes,' give name, place and date of filing and result."
  • "Place of Residence (if different from mailing address)"

After reading all these warnings, however, I'm getting paranoid and considering going back to my forms and putting "N/A" or "None" everywhere, even in those fields where the lack of an answer clearly implies non-applicability to me.

Has anyone here actually gotten an RFE for leaving a conditional question blank?

Thanks for any input--I'm excited!

Hey first of all congratulations on your marriage!!

Now I just filed mine so I can't really talk from experience but I did it randomly as I thought appropriate. But I definitely didn't write None or N/A everywhere there was a space, hopefully it's not too wrong.

Once more congrats and happy filing! :P

I think it's best just to put them in. Obviously you don't have to put them in every single space (especially the parts with like former spouse and the following information about the spouse), but what does it hurt to put it in? Wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry?

Thanks for the replies, guys. Right before I mailed my package, I caved in and put "N/A" and "None" by hand in a few of the fields I had left blank. I felt kinda dirty doing so, but oh well.

By the way, USCIS received my package last Tuesday, and I finally got four notices of acceptance by e-mail today. They all have different receipt numbers and state that my case has been transferred to the National Benefits Center. I also provided my cell number, but I have received no text messages so far.

I can't wait to get the NOA1 in the mail!
