I just want to say that really enjoy the lively discussions that take place here in the Off Topic forum. After I joined VJ back in May I sort of stumbled upon this forum and quickly got hooked into the discussions. I have moderated my own political debate group on MySpace for the last year and a half and this forum was refreshing because there seems to be a more balanced and varied collection of views here among VJ members than what I was used to. It's also nice not being the moderator because before I had to balance between participating in the discussions and keeping the peace.

Anyhow, I look forward to the ongoing discussions but at the end of the day, it's just a bloody forum (OT) that fills our time as we all go through this visa process. Cheers! :star:

Steven is a Stirrer! I guess he was tired of being balanced and "keeping the peace."

In accordance with Georgia law, "The Georgia Security and Immigration Compliance Act," I am required to display the following in any and all languages that I may give immigration related advise:

'I AM NOT AN ATTORNEY LICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW AND MAY NOT GIVE LEGAL ADVICE OR ACCEPT FEES FOR LEGAL ADVICE.'

"NO SOY ABOGADO LICENCIADO PRACTICAR LEY Y NO PUEDO DOY ASESORAMIENTO JURÍDICO O ACEPTO LOS HONORARIOS PARA El ASESORAMIENTO JURÍDICO."

The politics of VJ are bollocks.

You are, of course, free to ignore them. ;)

I always enjoy a good debate for my part and OT is one of the main reasons I keep returning here. :P

Except unfortunately - what seems to happen (often) is that the distinction between 'good debate' becomes rather blurry, with people indulging their personal dislikes to the detriment of the topic actually being discussed.

That is rather unfortunate. However, it's still possible to have a good debate because it's not like we all agree on everything, do we? Otherwise debate would be pointless because the world would be black and white. ;)

That is rather unfortunate. However, it's still possible to have a good debate because it's not like we all agree on everything, do we? Otherwise debate would be pointless because the world would be black and white. ;)

Absolutely - which is essentially the problem exposed in the other thread. That some people only see the world in a very narrow way, and can only deal with contrary opinions by first putting them in an (incorrect) context which they can respond to.

Hence an idea is rubbished, not because of the merits of the idea - but because it is deemed to be liberal.

I agree. It's a nice distraction.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Here

Thanks, yeah this offtopic thing can get out of control sometimes when political and/or religious beliefs come into play. Steven, it is nice to see what goes on here. I must admit I am guilty myself of sometimes straying off of the subject due to my own previous experiences and beliefs. I try to be careful using generalizations, they always seem to bring too much emotion into the discussions.
