I would miss a lot of things if I moved back to Canada too. I guess moving to a border town really would be like having 'the best of both worlds'

ETA... wait there would be no wawa up there forget it. :P

:o I had not heard about that! I came to the US as a visit 5 years ago and ended up staying; most of the news I get from my family is regarding my family. That would've been quite the news story, I bet, eep...

San Antonio also had good pizzas. The only mom&pop pizza place in this town closed down years ago so it takes going to another town to get somewhat decent pizza. There are, however, at least 3 "Mexican" restaurants around.

I might be able to fine mascarpone cheese here, but then I'd have to try and find the utterly elusive "giant lady finger" biscuits.

I have the feeling you and I could keep reminiscing about various Woodbridge things for a long time, haha. Like... Did you know they used some of Woodbridge for a Disney movie - and also something from Gene Roddenberry was shot outside one of the recreation centers! I can't find anything about whatever Roddenberry shot, but I recall driving by and seeing a sign out. I think they were using the field perhaps.

Yea, the murder happened many years ago.

I told my husband that next time we go back to Woodbridge, we're getting a veal sandwich! I don't think he's ever had one, so mine as well go for something good.

When I looked for lady fingers at the grocery store, I found them in the bread aisle....after I searched up & down in the cookie aisle. Huh.

I did not know they used Woodbridge in a movie...learned sommething new, hehe.

Today was a bad day for me - I ranted, I raved about how much I hated being here and how I just can't find the right pocket of friends. I hate the traffic, people's attitudes, people at work, the weather....today just wasn;t a good day. My poor husband :(

So almost 3 years later it happens every once in a while. Hopefully tomorrow will be better

Very nice, inspiring post :) Thanks for the uplifting words!

@ Nab

The posts you've written are very inspirational and heartwarming. :) *Big hug!* I've always wanted to bake but never have the ingredients on hand. I think I read somewhere there is a way to make bagels in the oven but it really does seem that throwing them in the water is a defining characteristic, hehe.

 thank you to both of you ... it just hurts my heart so much to see others in pain so i couldnt keep quiet, but i tend to ramble on when giving advice

 lucky for me, when i ramble on, my husband knows to pretend to be listening and throws in an "i see" now and then :star: he's a good man :D

on the bagels, i think the reason for the immersion in boiling water (besides making them puff up) is to make them moist so when baked in oven they dont dry out...

this conversation has me wanting to make them when i get home from dr later today!!! So stressed out dont know if i can even drive there :( but baking is one of the things that brings me joy and reduces my stress ...

as for always wanting to bake, you should try it! it's so cheap and you can make awesome things... feel free to PM me and i can send you recipes or we can start an off topic recipe thread :)

Quite a few years back i had to stop baking because i couldnt knead the dough any longer but found a couple years later that bread machines are GREAT for that! i've only baked in mine once, worse bread i ever tasted :P but it is a fantastic kneader and you can pick up used ones in Goodwill stores for cheap, usually like new because people dont use them!

:ot2:

wondering how the OP is doing... and quite a few others feeling same way... hope you all are doing well and seeing the silver lining. be good to your husbands and they will reflect that back to you

if all else fails, buy a big ol' punching bag and go to town on that thing when you feel angry  i actually built up some strength on mine when going thru court with ex, cause even then i was never mean to him :D lucky for him i had that punching bag :innocent:

or try renting "Anger Management" with Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler (love his movies!) and whenever you feel violently angry think of when they sing "I feel pretty" in it :lol:

I may have been too young to hear about the murder, or perhaps I heard it in passing and it never stuck in my mind...

There's a list of foods I'll be eating whenever I get to go back. I anticipate some weight gain as such. I don't think my husband has ever had a veal sandwich either, but I'm not sure if he's even going to go back with me to visit as he doesn't care much for my family (aside from my grandmother). I wish everyone would be on okay ground with one another but I don't think that will ever happen. :\

If I can get to an Ingles (kinda like Longos) at some point in time, I'll start a darn crusade to find mascarpone cheese and lady fingers.

I think it was my mother who told me about Woodbridge being used for the Disney movie, she was down on Woodbridge Avenue and saw a bunch of action going on.

Today was a bad day for me - I ranted, I raved about how much I hated being here and how I just can't find the right pocket of friends. I hate the traffic, people's attitudes, people at work, the weather....today just wasn;t a good day. My poor husband :(

*Big hug* We're only human. :) I hope the next day is better for you.

@ Nab

I've read about bread machines - they definitely seem like a good investment, though I imagine it can be kind of hit or miss. If you buy a not so great one, you may end up with less than desirable bread. I don't pass into our local Goodwill too often, but I have never seen a bread machine. I think most people here just buy bread, especially if they hear that there is any snow forecasted. Lots of people have trouble getting out of their driveways when it snows here so they all buy up lots of milk and bread just in case they get "snowed in" or the power goes out.

I hope that you were/are able to get out to the doctor's and that it wasn't too stressful on you. At least you have a pastime that helps you relieve stress and results in tasty things to eat! What you've said about bagels sounds logical to me. :)

A punching bag sounds awesome - my parents had one but I never had a need for it really. I greatly dislike going down into our basement so I would not really use a punching bag if we had one because that's the only place we would be able to put it.

I've been reading this with some interest. Although I haven't moved to Michigan yet, I did just move from Nunavut to southern Ontario. If you know anything about either place, HUGE change. I won't go into all the specifics of how different Nunavut is, but coming back to Ontario has been a huge culture shock. I'm also mostly jobless (doing some at-home stuff) and I don't have my Suzuki, my nice apartment, or my 2 other cats (could only bring 1). I've done all of this to be closer to A, which does honestly make it worth it (he lives 90 miles from me, I'm on the border and he's near it) but I have found myself missing the life I worked so hard for. I am living in my dad's apartment now, whereas I was loving living by myself. I guess it's good prep for getting married (which will be my second marriage) but I would rather be adjusting to my husband, not to my dad.

I guess I feel lucky, though, because right now, visiting A is very easy and once I've moved, coming home will be very easy, too. I can come up and spend the day in my hometown and see my family if I want. I know I'm very lucky for that.

Very interesting read! As we are all going through this,I, realize I havent taken much time to think about the move and leaving Canada in any great length. However, as I am reading these thoughts, it's 9 a/m, and the church plays O Canada (i live very close to the church) daily at this time, and tears came to my eyes. I too, will be leaving so much behind. My kids will be the hardest part for me; although they are older 24,18,14, youngest lives with his dad. But I'll be in Maine and thats close to NB! Then theres a career that I've worked hard at since 1997. Friends and I will miss them alot - I've gone through a long dark period in my life, and some of them were there for me al the way. But then theres simply being gone from Canada. I love the US, I havent had any negative experiences and I have visited quite a few states by now. But we are Canadians and I think we all feel that sense of home. I can't predict how its going to affect me once there. But I know I am in love with a wonderful man that I waited a long time for -

Good Luck Everyone

Just checking back in with this thread. :)

It's getting a little easier each day, now that I've started the AOS ball rolling. But it does help that I get to talk to my mom and other members of my family pretty much every day. Either with email or Skype. I did get a small parcel from my parents yesterday, that made me a little weepy. But I know, that they're always going to be there for me, no matter what. And that, even though I'm a couple thousand miles away, BC will ALWAYS be my home.

The next time I do fly home, most likely in the new year, I plan to get a tattoo that blends my BC/Canadian upbringing with my new Iowa/US life. Still working out what exactly it's going to be, but that's how I want to bring everything together. :)

Take care, everybody!! (L)

Not quite what I was going for, but thanks for the idea. ;)

I was more thinking about doing the flowers for Iowa and BC or a realistic looking maple leaf and a feather, to symbolize the eagle. Just getting some ideas together.

Hey, I know how you feel

It is true, the woman gives up so much. But, don't leave, I did, and now starting the whole process all over again.

For me , I became very ill, depress. I went home, what a big, big mistake that was.I love my husband so much. He loves me, this I know because he never complains that we are going through this again. Be strong, things will changed.

Marie
