Am I Required to Activate My CR1 on a Visit?

Hello all,

Just wondering if someone has been in a similar situation and could offer some advice. I have my CR-1 visa in my passport and the package to take to U.S. customs at the POE. My visa is valid until December 2010. I am heading down to the U.S. this Saturday for a two week trip and was wondering when I cross the border on this trip if I am required to activate my CR-1. The reason I would like to hold off on activating it for at least another month or so is because I am waiting for some $$ to pay off my car before I export it, and I read in the 'info about your immigrant visa' handout that if you are exporting a car, it should be exported at the same time or within several weeks of entering the U.S. as a permanent resident.

I believe you have up to a year to import your car so if that's the only issue you can activate your visa and import the car at a later date. In fact at my POE they didn't even ask me about my car; I had to tell them I wanted to import it that day. Good luck!

My fiance' (now husband) didn't have his car paid off (his Canadian car loan) and he was still able to import it to the U.S. when he activated his K-1 visa.
