Hi all- havent been on in awhile because everything has been smooth, Thank God. My husband has the interview for citizenship august 17 this year in california HOWEVER he has just been informed that his brother AND sister are getting married in Morocco the beginning and middle of September. He hasnt been to Morocco since coming here three years ago and is dying to attend the weddings. Of course we are dying to have this process over as well, but his family is soo important that he is having a hard time knowing what to do. Has anyone heard anything about requesting a delay- we have never ever rescheduled any USCIS related interviews or biometrics. This timing is so severly crucial-- just looking for advice. Thanks a lot in advance.

Trip to Morocco in September should not impact an interview in August....

We are afraid if he is in the citizenship process but doesnt take the oath and have the american passport by the time he needs to go that something will go wrong somewhere. Wont let him back in, do they look at that like abandoning his citizenship request. Is the test/oath process separate dates or the same date?

oath and interview do not always occur on the same date... depends on the local office

Two things:

1. He is a LPR, so he will be allowed in.

2. Rescheduling an interview or oath date is not difficult and USCIS will do that. The only thing you need to pay attention to is not taking the oath and then trying to leave the country.... once the oath is taken, he is a US citizen and needs a US passport to exit and enter the US. Usually, when he goes for the oath, they ask him if he traveled or something else had happened (like DUI, or any incriminating act) and all he needs to do is say, yes, such and such dates I have traveled and that's it.

Just make sure that someone is checking your mail and do not put it on hold.

if his interview is in august, he can plan on going in september, however when he takes his interview, have him ask when the oath ceremony is scheduled so he can know if he will be able to go and make it back in time, as far as going in and out he wont have any problem doing so using his GC, however if he takes the ceremony befor he go to marroco he wont be able to leave the country untill he gets his passport, since they will take his GC away, and trade it with the citizenship certeficate. I am in his shoes too, I had to put on hold all my plans for now, since Iam still waiting on the Oath letter, had my interview on july 13

ps: he can take his interview then go home if he recieved the Oath letter while he is in marroco, he can request to schedule the Oath, the only impact this will have is to make him wait longer even really I dont advice to reschedule his oath ceremony, you never know how long it will take them to reschedule him for another one

he has to ask the officer when it the next oath ceremony. if he cannot make it advise the officer to sign him up for the next one. the officer will know what to do.

I has my interview on June 9th, there was an oath ceremony for the end of the month. I couldn't make it because a co-worker was on vacation and I was her substitute for certain tasks. I told her that I couldn;t make it. She andvised me that there would be another one in July but she didn't know the date, but that I would receive the letter for the oath ceremony in the mail.

Fair enoungh I did and my oath ceremony is tomorrow, I'm so excited. so he can reschedule the ceremony to have it when he returns.

You can reschedual that oath ceremony, however it's never adivised due to the unpredictability of it. Many of people have found themselves in very long delays when they get entered back into the system for re-schedualed oaths, hearing cases where people had to wait longer then 6 months isn't unheard of.

But yes you are thinking ahead at least. An Aug interview could possibly mean a Sept Oath ceremony depending on where you are. My adivse is to ask the interview officer when they might have the oath if your husband passes the interview as already mentioned and then maybe you can figure out from there what to do next.

Making the oath re-schedual is easy to do, it's just putting you back into the USCIS system where it could become another USCIS nightmare of waiting again. Now not saying everyone waits 6 months or longer, some have been lucky to get it fairly quick. It's just a risk and you won't know the outcome until you sit and wait with no idea when you'll get the next oath...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Sounds familiar, your spouse is in the process of completely a long journey and just informed about a family member getting marries at the same time. Couldn't they have informed you of their plans beforehand? Wife ran into this, would require to have a valid foreign passport and a green card as the only means of travel, not much time to buy airline tickets unless you are planning on walking, or maybe you have a Gulfstream private jet at your disposal, then having sufficient vacation time left over.

In regards to having that green card, you already applied for the I-751 got the one year extension that is just about ready to expire, already applied for naturalization, have your interview scheduled and where is that ten year card you need so badly to come back?

Sorry, we just can't make it, not enough time to do everything we have to do to make it on such short notice. On a selfish note, did he family members drop everything to attend your wedding? And what about those three years in between? None of my wife's relatives could make it for our very special wedding. Did his brother and sister attend your wedding?

When things settled down, we got a wedding present, had her US Passport, scheduled the trip and visited her family. Present was US cash in an envelop, would really play hell trying to bring in anything else through customs. We shared their joy in looking at their wedding pictures and welcomed the new member to her family. So all worked out in the end.

Most important thing for us to secure our own marriage was to have my wife be a US citizen and with all the problems we had with the I-751, we really had our doubts as to whether we would even have a life together.

What is the most important thing in your life?
