Hi all,

just realized that the person that translated my documents for I-130 is not someone that has a degree, she translated and just put at the bottom of translation that she was competent in both languages (in my case spanish to english) so anyone that is fluent in the language can do this even me!!! lol after translated should they be notarized?

wondering if I should take a chance, I am doing all paperwork on my own now don't think she will translate for me... I am saving over 700 just in paper work!! I spent so much on I-130 GRRRRRR!!

"Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

There is no mention anywhere of any notarization. It needs to be certified. This means that the translator says (certifies) that they are fluent in both languages. I have translated all my documents and have seen many others translate their own document.

When you stop and think about it, it doesn't make sense to say that they need to be notarized. A notary needs to understand that what they are notarizing is true. They are not going to put their seal on something they can't understand. While Spanish is common, many other languages aren't, and finding a notary fluent in the language might be impossible. Whether that is the reason or not, a notarization isn't required.

i does NOT need to be notarized.

you could have done it yourself. as long as you signed and dated the form at the bottom.

we notarized one translation, but it was not necessary. it just looks better if you do.

If you need any help with translations let me know.. my fiancee has a translator/interpreter degree from chile.. but that letter will be fine as long as the translation is done right.. My good for nothing laywer had someone translate my fiancees birth cert... the letter they put was pretty much the same thing..

Just to give people an update... as of 2012 the USCIS is still receiving "self-translated" documents for the I-130. I did the same process using the exact same wording as used in a post above (I believe it was cut and pasted) and did not have a problem in regards to this portion of the process. Best of luck to all!
