I still enjoy checking in with the news media back home in Canada, and every now and then I come across a news story that makes me smile - and feel nostalgic and sometimes even homesick. Today, a friend of mine (who is the newscaster reporting this story) sent me this link - the Guinness World Record Breaking "Longest Tractor Parade" from Dresden, Ontario! Old record - 601 tractors; new record - 1230! Funds raised have gone to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The strike at Vale-Inco (Sudbury) finally ended a couple of weeks ago. Not really "fun" but a relief for all those families that were scrapping by for almost a year.

I have the news channel from Victoria in my favourites, and go to it frequently. There sure is a lot of stuff happening on the Island! :o But one of the things I just recently watched was the fire ban that is on the lower part of BC and Vancouver Island, except a little strip of land (beach) called Goose Spit in the Comox Valley! (where I'm originally from) Because there is water on both sides of the strip, you can still have fires on the beach. There is nothing like an evening out in summer, sitting around a fire, roasting marshmallows! Good ole CV for keeping something alive! :lol:

It's funny, but here in SC, people give me strange looks when I tell them I miss sitting around fires in the middle of summer! :P

Oh, this isn't particularly 'news', but a guy some friends of mine know (I don't know him myself) apparently just won the Elvis impersonator competition in Collingwood at the Elvis Festival this weekend :lol:

I'm always checking out the papers from Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Victoria, among others in Canada!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I read the home town online newspaper almost everyday.

Biggest news out of Welland that was close to home last week: a rash of garage break-ins. My ex's house was hit. The thief took a very expensive mountain bike, one of my sons lost his Iphone and of all things a pair of shoes. The thief left his old ones though. :lol:

The hapless thief was arrested a couple of days later. The police stopped him riding a bike while towing another bike behind him :) No news on the missing shoes yet.

Former Leafs defense man Mike Van Ryn is going to be an assistant coach for the Niagara Ice Dogs. Should be a nice boost for them! I used to like seeing those OHL kids play. It's 100% heart and determination!

Apparently they're shooting a movie in Sudbury called "High Chicago". Indie film, but I'll watch it to see if it's good.

Also, every major road in Sudbury has lane closures due to construction. That's one thing that I don't miss about living there.

Guelph hosted it's 11th annual Hillside Festival and for the 11th straight year I guess it rained. Not that I've ever been to it or reconize a single band that's ever played, but it's always fun looking the day after the festival to see how bad everyone got soaked...
