NKorea threatens 'nuclear deterrence' over drills

I doubt our response would be nuclear either. And I don't see it working by any other means. I base my opinions on what I have seen for several decades. It didn't work in Vietnam, it didn't work in Iraq, it's not working in Afghanistan.

The huge difference between Korea and those places though is Koreans are one people. A conventional @$$-kicking would only work if it was followed by re-unification. There wouldn't be two separate countries anymore, there'd be but one Korea.

Since the South's government is almost as corrupt as ours and it's people - by the day - are becoming as greedy and apathetic, the longer the timeline, the less likely we are to see that happen. As the old folks who have relatives (who they remember) die off, the ties that bind the two together will die as well. It's a cause for the college kids, but many abandon it by the time they make some serious money and realize their economy would crash if war or re-unification drastically occured.

It's going to be real hairy for the next couple years. If we can ride Kim out, and he doesn't go crazy in his last days, we might be allright.

I don't think he'll do anything but push it as far as he can without actually starting a major conflict, but you never know if he will decide to go out in a blaze of glory. The people who remember a unified Korea are all getting old now. There isn't much left that binds them together. Any war on the peninsula would be devastating. I just don't see a conventional a$$ kicking as a possibility.

Americans should really ask themselves why it takes so long for foreign stories to break into the US media. I read about this 2 days ago in the British press, and it is not the first time that has happened.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

it's about 15-20 currently. as the city grows, it may be a few miles, but that's somewhere in the future.

That's what I'm afraid of. I think he's going to get to that point where he says, "well, it's now or never. I'm going to die in the next year or two, might as well give it a shot." If we're really lucky he'll go the other way with that and agree to re-unification.

The people who remember a unified Korea are all getting old now. There isn't much left that binds them together.

They've passed it down pretty well but they will be dead soon. The good thing is many Koreans still see themselves as one big family so it's possible the feeling of being one people can be preserved.

As much as they're one people, those two militaries HATE each other and war would go all the way to the end. It could go nuclear, but no one would really win a nuclear war and that's why I think we'll see it stay conventional.

We've got bigger fish to fry. Lindsay Lohan went to jail, the oil well was plugged... you know, breaking news.

The big American media has long been known to sit on a story for a few days until it's either "approved" or "convenient" to report. This story was out there as soon as it happened but it wasn't on TV because, hello.... Lindsay's going to jail!

I can not be bothered with tv news, hardly ever watch it - an hour to say something that could be said in 10 mins? Who has the patience and all the presenters telling us what we should think about each piece of minutiae (not confined to US tv btw). I expect there were newspapers that reported it, but the US does not seem to have a national press, which is something I am used to using.

I do not get the general public's obsession with the antics of minor celebs. Hey ho.

I like MSNBC.com. You might have to poke around a bit, but you can get worldwide news.
