I have no connection to or direct experience with immigration and the US military, so the following is just what I've picked up here. If I've missed anything really important could someone with more direct experience chime in?

My understanding is that you do not need a reentry permit if you are abroad for an extended period of time on military orders. Living abroad with a military spouse on orders is equivalent to living in the US for residency purposes. When you go to reenter the US you will NEED copies of the relevant orders (at least the return orders and probably the deployment orders as well), You present these to US Customs and you should have no problems.

Your husband's base will have an immigration officer you can and should talk to to get more specific info. Let us know what they say.

I believe being a family member (spouse, child) of a military member stationed overseas is still considered to be living in the US. Make sure you have a copy of his orders showing when he PCS'd and his return date (when you come back) with dependents listed.

Please double check to be certain.

The military base in Italy is considered US soil, a.k.a. Little America. You do live abroad on US soil, just if you were to live in Guam or a US spaceship. Do you not need a Reentry Permit.

Boy . . . do I envy you. Where in Italy?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

i have a problem. i am going to live in italy for a year and a half on MILITARY ORDERS. my husband is a member of the air force. do i need to apply for re-entry permit? please anyone who knows kindly answer. thank you!

Use 319(B).......on the orders of your husband, and you can do away with the 3 year wait.. Use his orders to get your n400 started....then you wont ever need a reentry....

Since you are on military orders (CMS), you are considered living in an american soil. NO re-entry permit required.

If you are considering Naturalization you can apply under the INA 319(b), Get your package ready and apply as soon as possible, you can either apply before leaving the states or even after getting to the new duty station, just make sure that you leave an enough window for the 1 year after inteview date overseas assignment requirement.

You can find all the requirments at http://www.hoodmwr.com/acs/Media/Program_folder/IRO/Naturalization/319b_FAQ.pdf

and since you are a military spouse, send your application to Nebraska.

Good Luck.

Thanks everyone for replying! Yes y'all are right, I don't need the re-entry permit. My concern now is if I can apply for naturalization because I will be living overseas with my husband on military orders. i've read many threads that said i can apply for it once I get to Italy, but i had an infopass yesterday and the immigration officer I talked to said i cant apply. I asked him so many things, then he told me to wait and i waited like 10 minutes.. He had to research and all that, then like towards the end of our conversation its like he was telling me that I dont need the re-entry permit coz I can apply for citizenship. ahh its so confusing i swear. :(

And um I will be staying in AVIANO ITALY. I think its near Sicily or something lol I'm so excited! aha yal can visit :)
