Well, I am sure that up to a point that's true, legalization, or even decriminalization should reduce abuses in this area. However, I would say that unless a woman/man has alternate options to make a similar amount of money by other means but decides that they would prefer to be a prostitute, choosing to be a prostitute for economic reasons is not really a 'free' choice. That is my opinion on the matter - although obviously others hold different opinions.

I am a believer in legalized prostitution (not surprising, coming from Amsterdam).

In this situation, it depends on the daughter. If she was smart and independent, going to college, seemingly having her life in order, and she came to me and explained in an adult way her choice of making money, and her motivation behind it, I wouldn't kick up a fuss. I don't think I'd be too happy about it, but I wouldn't stand in her way or judge her.

I think that if a woman believes she can separate love and sex, and feel alright within herself selling intimacy, that's her business. I would insist she charge high rates, though!

Of course, if I didn't feel she was very together, and had come up with this idea on a whim and hadn't researched it or thought it through, I would make an attempt to discourage her, or at least try to find out if she understands the possible consequences to her health and the way she views herself.

I think it's important for parents to show unconditional love towards their children, as far as that is possible.

I believe there are people out there who will exchange sexual favours for gifts, monetary or otherwise, but I don't think most of these women would be classified as 'prostitutes' - mostly because they would only engage in sex with people they found attractive sexually - and I am sure they do discriminate. Prostitutes are never portrayed as having the opportunity to make these kinds of choices, but perhaps if it was legal and there were more of them, this would indeed be true. If it were true, then yes, the ethical problems with prostitution lessen considerably.
