What would you say to your daughter (a hypothetical one - and so as not to get bogged on in the "well, it would be ok but I'd have to tell her no because it's illegal" argument, in this hypothesis prostitution is legal) if she came to you and told you she had decided to pay off her college fees by becoming a prostitute? Let's imagine also, that she is going to turn down a reasonably well paying, but boring office job in order to pursue her 'career' choice.

Any thoughts?

I'd have a problem with it. Prostitution offers little career growth, no opportunities for career growth outside of owning/operating a service and of course it is very dangerous (assault, disease, etc.).

I'd also have a problem with her wanting to be a WalMart cashier or a diver with great white sharks.

Career growth? Well, no one said prostitution is mentally stimulating, perhaps she could get that elsewhere, doing some kind of voluntary work? In terms of earnings though, if she played it right, she could earn herself enough to be quite comfortable in retirement, or indeed she could embark on a second career later.

There are plenty of dangerous careers that women undertake, not all of them are menial - would the danger be ok if there was an intellectual component to the career choice?

But, apart from the lack of mental acumen required and that it's potentially dangerous, it's ok?

Oh, and just so I tick off the correct boxes, you would pay for sex, or you have no ethical objections to prostitution, correct?

Another (related) question might be whether people--often males, it seems--who equate prostitution with accepting drinks or indeed receiving alimony would make a distinction if the subject was their daughter or a close family member. That is, if you discovered that your daughter was accepting free drinks and engaging in one-night stands on a regular basis, would you find that as upsetting as a decision to pursue prostitution as a means of support? This is, of course, going on the assumption that you'd rather she not engage in these types of activities.

I was going to ask that in the last thread but didn't make it.

For my daughter, no. I'd have a problem with it but if she (she who does not exist) is anything like me she won't care.

No ethical objections. I would not personally do it though. I have a hard enough time using public restrooms, germs freak me out.

I think you should go for it Cleo. :D

Fair enough, although our children are not always 'like us' in terms of what they consider dangerous or 'dirty' so there is no guarantee that a mythical (and I prefer mythical offspring in this thread) offspring will care about the same things we do.

What about a son? Would there be any objections to a son becoming a prostitute?

I've already said that I have ethical objections to prostitution. Just for the record, I would not pay for sex, nor would I want to be paid for sex . Aside from ethics, I personally am not interested in sex with people I do not know or engage with emotionally - I do not find the idea of having sex with multiple partners exciting and have no interest in sex for its own sake outside of a long term committed relationship.

Outside of religious morals? No I don't see an ethical problem with prostitution when the woman (or man) has free choice.

I have a moral problem with it, but I also believe in separation of church and state.

What do you consider 'free choice' and would you think it prudent for those who wish to buy sex to somehow vet their prostitute to ensure they were willing participants? If so, how would that be accomplished?

Yes, for the same reasons.

Splendid.

Did you say if you would or would not pay for sex yourself? I can't remember :)

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought countries like Germany did just that by bringing it out in the open.
