Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team Still Waiting Over Passport Dilemma

Josh Boose

NEW YORK (AP) -- Talks are under way between the State Department and an Iroquois team that refuses to use U.S. passports for travel to the Lacrosse World Championship in England.

A State Department official said Wednesday that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has taken an interest in the case. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because talks are ongoing.

Clinton is a former New York senator. The Iroquois Confederacy oversees land that stretches from upstate New York into Ontario, Canada.

The team needs to get on a Wednesday flight to make a Thursday evening game in Manchester, England.

The players want to use passports issued by the Iroquois Confederacy. They regard U.S. government-issued documents as an attack on their identity.

"We've been around the world on these things and right now just having this issue is really upsetting to us," said Iroquois Nationals General Manager S. Ansley Jemison.

"We've been around the world on these things and right now just having this issue is really upsetting to us," said Iroquois Nationals General Manager S. Ansley Jemison.

The team says they were told by U.S. customs they would only be allowed to return here with U.S. passports. After years of using their Native American passports the documents are suddenly not good enough.

"Twenty three world class athletes I don't foresee as being a national security threat," said Ansley.

The 40 member group, including four players and a coach from Western New York missed their 4pm flight on Tuesday to the lacrosse championship in England.

"We've traveled for 27 years on this document and I don't know why, I can't tell you why the sudden change of opinion," said Dr. Percy Abrams, Executive Director of the Iroquois Nationals.

All the U.S. State Department would say Tuesday is;

"We are more than willing to help these athletes with very, very fast, expedited processing of a U.S. passport." That was according spokesperson Nicole Thompson.

The team says they declined.

"What about the people at home watching tonight that say, come on, why not just get a U.S. passport and

then you'll be fine?" 2 On Your Side's Josh Boose asked Abrams.

"We are the national team for the Iroquois and we've had recognition all this time," Abrams replied. "It's our integrity. It's our principal for this."

Integrity he says because the Iroquois helped invent lacrosse; something the natives take very seriously. But unless some last minute work by local members of Congress comes through, the closest this team will get to their championship game is the airport.

The lacrosse championship begins on Thursday in Manchester, England. The team is scheduled to play on Saturday morning.
