Hi,

I would like to visit my fiance next month after we have filed for our I-129F form. He lives in Florida but we are both going to visit his mother in California. What should I tell the immigration officer? Do I say I am visiting my fiance or do I say I am going on vacation to California? Have any Canadians crossed the border at this location (Ambassador Bridge) and if so what should I expect? I know I need proof of ties in Canada but what happens if I am denied entry? Thanks for your advice!

HI :) I crossed the border last year at Ambassador Bridge while my K1 was pending. I was with my then fiance and the border officer asked me to prove that I actually applied for K1 visa. I had my interview already set up and I showed him the letter and he let us go. It's really up to the officer to let you through. I think if you tell the truth, that you're visiting your fiance, you should be ok. He'll probably ask other questions, when you're getting married, who's moving where. Just tell the truth and say you filed for K1 visa already and hopefully you have a receipt? Maybe have a letter from work, if you have one, that you plan on coming back. Hope that helps.

quite a few of us k1's have crossed there. I crossed for an entire month during my k1 process. just be truthful and honest and bring a copy of your k1 file with you and proof of ties to canada as usual. do not be scared if they pull you in to secondary they did for me each time i crossed.

My free advice is in my signature below!!! I traveled monthly to DC, never had a problem! It all comes down to the POE officer!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Crossed multiple times a week there last year.

Tell them the truth about why you're crossing.

I brought my ties to Canada & proof that we started the K1 process.

Keep you answers short.

Enjoy your visit!!

Thanks for your replies!

What if we haven't received a reply from USCIS because we just sent our package? I can bring a copy of what we sent but we may not have a confirmation the it was received by USCIS!

They never asked to see anything from my fiancee, they just asked her what stage she was at in the process. YMMV.

that doesn't matter, just explain you sent it in but have not received your receipt for it. did you send it by courrier? if so you can bring that. I have a copy of my fedex receipt, copy of the cheque, and a printout of when it was received / signed for. bringing a copy of the petition itself wont hurt you either.
