SEN. HARRY REID (D-NV): "Isn't it a good thing today in America that we have an automobile manufacturing sector? If it had been up to them [Republicans], General Motors would be gone. If it were up to them, Ford Motor Company would probably be gone. Chrysler definitely would be gone."

Ford did not take any bailout money from the government.

Good ole Harry.

Though he's right. GM should be gone. It's the risk of running a business.

Can't see the video now... but since we're all supposedly on a 'context' kick... can someone that doesn't have a Reid or Pelosi ####### in place confirm that the senator stated that with full intention, thus reflecting a total incompetence of the Bailout?

Just checking.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Yes he did.

No context problem here. Dingy Harry claims, as ALC stated, that "if it were up to them ... Ford would probably be gone", and further claims "we decided that they needed help" (basically including each of the Big 3 in that statement).

And for the record, I dislike politicians in general, not just Dingy Harry.

Cool. Even though... saying Republicans in one statement and making the mistake of saying Ford had any benefit from the Bailout... are two separate things.

Unless of course you count those autobuyers that disliked the bailout so much that they forced themselves into Ford vehicles... that could be construed to be some benefit from the bailout

Thing is, while Chevy and Chrysler were being saved, Ford came up with some pretty sweet cars on their own. ANd with the new Fiesta and Focus here and coming soon, they're still getting better.

They certainly are supposed to be getting better. Hope that's the case. I know a couple of auto workers at the South Chicago plant.

I'm a Ford girl -- a Taurus and a Mustang -- and I was pleased as punch to see Ford do as well as they have done, particularly having refused bailout money. Difficult circumstances have brought about real innovation. Can't say I'd ever buy a new foreign car -- happy to buy American. :)
