In continuation to my previous post, I forgot to mention that my wife and I live in Chicago, but I would be in Los Angeles for about a month now. Would I be allowed to go for fingerprinting in LA office?

So, my wife finally filed for my immigration today... and the long wait begins :)

i again am back with a couple of questions!

--> How long would it be, before they send me a letter for biometrics?

--> If we have filed in Chicago drop box, and right now im in LA, can I go to the USCIS LA office?

--> When can we start expediting the EAD and AP?

Thank you everyone on this forum who helped me file the petition!

Biometrics: depends on the office.

Office: What address did you list on the form? If you're in LA permanently but listed another address, then you'll have to file a change of address form for your interview etc to be in LA.

You can expedite it now, though the EAD can't be processed until you have your biometrics taken.

It's possible - if they take you as a walk in. I don't know anything about the LA office, but you'd have to do it as a walk in, if that's not the one closest to your listed address. If they don't take walk ins, then you're out of luck and will have to go to your 'home' office.

Ive mentioned chicago address in the form, and haven't moved to LA permanently.. its just for a month or so! So, i guess i will have to go to chicago office for my biometrics.

U mentioned about expediting the EAD. Can we expedite the AP as well? And if yes, how would that be?

Once you get the biometrics form, you can try to go to the LA office for a walk in, but only if you have the form in hand.

Thank you Leigh! I figured out about expediting the AP, through this forum elsewhere :-) From what i heard, it isnt a very tough thing, and most of the times it can happen the same day as you expedite it. Thanks again.

Now, as can be seen in my signature, we have sent the package on the 10th of August to the Chicago Lock-box. It is the 8th day today, but we haven't received a text/email or NOA yet, nor have the cheques been encashed. I understand there would be many more tests of patience before I finally get through this process of immigration, I would just like to ask one thing here. As can be seen from almost everyone's signature, the text/email is received by the 6th day, and the cheques are encashed by the 7th day too. The reason of my impatience is that I have to expedite my Advance Parole because my grandmother is critically ill in India and I need to travel (as posted in another thread by me). Is there a problem here? I called the NSC, and they said if the cheques get cashed, I can ask the bank for the receipt number that would be written on the back of the cheques. Has anyone heard about that? Thank you all.

I almost understood this reply, but let me just clarify it further. My wife, who would not be able to meet the sponsorship income requirements, would fill up the i864. Her father, who becomes the joint sponsor, would fill out the i864 too. And then his wife, since she is included in the assets/tax returns, would fill out the i864a. Am i correct? Does her dad need to fill out the i864a?

Thank you

No you're not correct. The I-864A is ONLY required by the joint-sponsors wife if HER income and HER assets are also used to help support the immigrant. Filing tax jointly does not mean that an i-864A must be completed. Many many people have ONE parent co-sponsor for them and the other parent does not bother with the I-864A because their income/assets are not being used. If it IS being used then yes, and I-864A is required.

We tried to get AP expedited and were denied. Also, a lot of people try to get EAD expedited and are denied. We used the financial hardship category, because he had this return ticket sitting around and we had already changed it with the fees once, and said that waiting and changing it again, with the possibility of a third time was a lot of money. But they said it was serious but not the highest priority, and would not expedite. We tried congressman and he said that was USCIS policy, although he was very nice. Perhaps with a different claim (ie ill relative) it would go through. I think saying "it's not a tough thing" is getting your hopes up. You can always try with no harm done though. Good luck!

For timelines, look at all of our signatures. Also, in the "Progress reports" area below this forum, there should be an August filers thread, so you can hang out with people who filed near to you and see how their cases are progressing. Good luck!

Thanks for your help! I found the progress report thread, and that's where i will put my concerns.

Yes, about the expedited AP, my reason is life/death situation, and I hope they acknowledge it. Thanks again!

Well, I am adjusting my status from B1/B2 visa. Would it be not possible to travel on AP to my home country before I get my greencard? I have read some people say that one should not leave without the greencard in hand!

NO! Do not do that. It's considered abandoning your application for the green card. You will have to refile, and getting back into the country after having filed an AOS form is not going to be particularly easy.

Do you mean to say that traveling on Advance Parole is illegal? Why, then, do they issue Advance Parole? I do understand though, that I should not travel without the AP document while adjusting my status. Can you please clarify/shed some light on it? Thanks!

Ack, sorry. I didn't read closely, thought you were just traveling before you got AP. No, traveling on AP should be fine. Apologies.
