anyone care to get back on topic which is whether we would tolerate a 'friend' who uses hookers

rather than -- 'is hookering a morally or socially good thing...'

On balance I think I would tolerate a 'close acquaintance' who does that if not a friend - but not with the toothless black eyed meths using scrubbers - but the relatively clean career ones who are either calculating minxes or brain dead thickos

It's the difference between buying a 15 year old pick up truck in Central Washington State or a new 7 series BMW in Frankfurt

In essence, it isn't much different. The question there is of consent and whether the woman is pressured into having sex. A lot of reported rapes come from incidents like that.

As to paying for it... aside from it forming a big part of the black economy, the question for me is why some men would rather pay for it than pursue a romantic relationship (or even one of convenience). To me it conveys certain attitudes the guy has towards women - that they are nothing more than disposable sex objects.
