Can a J1 visa be extended?

I have been told no by some people and yes by other?

I have the J1 visa that allows me to work over the summer? Is there a way of getting the duration extended?

It depends on the specifics/stipulations of your J-1 visa/program.

The specific J-1 program you are in will determine whether or not you can extend the length of the program.

You have to discuss it with your sponsor.

I've only personally known J-1 au pairs, so I don't know the specifics of other J-1 programs. There are so many different ones..

You mentioned something about summer work though.. which according dept of state regulation [22 CFR 62.32]:

62.32 Summer work travel.

These regulations govern program participation in summer work travel programs conducted by Department of State-designated sponsors pursuant to the authority granted the Department of State by Public Law 105–277. These programs provide foreign post-secondary students the opportunity to work and travel in the United States for a four month period during their summer vacations. Extensions of program participation are not permitted.

If this is the specific program you are in, it would appear that you are not able to extend.
